Alone On A Floating Plank, A Soaked Kitten Waits For A Hand She Can Trust

In a flooded home in Sri Lanka, a tiny orange and white kitten was found stranded on a narrow wooden plank as brown floodwater covered the floor around her. Broken furniture floated nearby, debris drifted past, and the damaged walls showed how far the water had risen inside the house.

A rescuer in a blue waterproof jacket waded in and knelt in the water, holding a soft cream towel open toward the frightened animal. The kitten, soaked and shaking, watched every movement before taking her first careful step.

Slowly, she placed her front paws on the towel and then walked onto the soft fabric. The rescuer wrapped her gently, leaving her face uncovered, and lifted her from the unstable plank.

Moments later, she was settled inside a bright orange rescue basket, safe above the floodwater and looking toward the camera. The basket, which had floated beside the plank throughout the rescue, became her first dry and secure shelter after the flood.

Rescuers say small animals are often the most vulnerable during floods, because rising water can trap them in minutes and leave them with no dry ground. A calm approach, a soft towel, and a secure container can make the difference between panic and safety.

For this little kitten, that difference arrived in the form of steady hands and patience. She left the plank cold and afraid, and she arrived in the basket warm, wrapped, and finally safe.
