AMERICAN TOURIST, 36, FALLS HUNDREDS OF FEET TO HER DEATH IN ITALY’S DOLOMITES DURING FAMILY HOLIDAY
A family vacation in the breathtaking Dolomites of northern Italy turned into tragedy when 36-year-old American tourist Michelle Alejandra Rubio Leiva fell to her death while hiking with relatives. Michelle, who lived in Florida, was visiting the Trentino region with her family when the fatal accident occurred on October 17, 2026, near Forcella Pordoi, a mountain pass above the town of Canazei. The area is known for its dramatic cliffs, rocky terrain and panoramic views that attract visitors from around the world.

According to reports, Michelle was walking with her relatives near the upper cable-car station and the route toward a mountain refuge. She reportedly moved away from the marked trail to reach an exposed viewpoint, possibly to take a photograph. During the incident, she lost her footing and plunged approximately 300 meters, or nearly 1,000 feet, down the mountainside. Her sister and other family members were reportedly nearby and witnessed the devastating fall.
Emergency services received an alert shortly before noon, prompting a rapid response from the Trentino Alpine Rescue service and an air ambulance. A rescuer who was already in the area helped guide the helicopter crew to the precise location. Medical personnel were lowered onto the mountainside at around 12:30 p.m., but despite the rescue team’s efforts, a doctor could only confirm that Michelle had died at the scene.

The recovery operation was followed by another difficult moment for the family, who were transported by helicopter to Canazei while rescuers worked to recover Michelle’s body. Her remains were subsequently taken off the mountain and handed over to the authorities. The sudden loss has transformed what was intended to be a memorable family trip into an experience marked by grief and shock.
Michelle was described in reports as a professional with experience in communications, marketing and business development, with professional connections to the Miami area. Her death has also drawn attention to the risks posed by exposed mountain viewpoints, where loose rocks, steep drops and uneven ground can make even a short step away from a designated trail dangerous. While reports suggest she may have left the path to take a photograph, the tragedy serves as a reminder for hikers to remain on marked routes and exercise caution around cliff edges, especially in unfamiliar alpine terrain.
