Appeals Court Upholds Life Sentence for Woman Who Stabbed 3-Year-Old Boy in Front of His Mother Outside Grocery Store

A devastating attack outside an Ohio grocery store has reached another legal milestone after an appeals court upheld the life sentence of a woman convicted of killing a 3-year-old boy in front of his mother. Bionca Ellis, 34, was sentenced to life in prison without the possibility of parole after being found guilty of aggravated murder in the death of Julian Wood. The latest ruling means her conviction and sentence will remain in place, closing another chapter in a case that shocked the community and left a family grieving an unimaginable loss.

The attack happened on June 3, 2024, in the parking lot of a Giant Eagle supermarket in North Olmsted, a suburb of Cleveland. Julian was shopping with his mother, Margot Wood, who was 37 at the time. While the mother and son were going about an ordinary day, Ellis was reportedly at a nearby Volunteers of America thrift store, where authorities said she stole two knives. Investigators later alleged that Ellis entered the supermarket, noticed the pair and followed them as they left the store.

According to prosecutors, Ellis followed Margot and Julian across the parking lot toward their vehicle before suddenly attacking the little boy, who was sitting in a shopping cart. Prosecutors said she stabbed Julian multiple times. His mother desperately tried to pull him out of the cart, but she was also stabbed during the attack. Bystanders called emergency services, and police officers rushed to the scene.

When officers arrived, they reportedly saw Ellis walking toward a nearby road with a knife in her hand. She was arrested, while Julian and his mother were taken to a local hospital. Despite efforts to save him, Julian was pronounced dead. Margot received treatment for her injuries, but the emotional consequences of losing her young son would extend far beyond the immediate aftermath of the attack.

Authorities said they did not believe Ellis had any prior relationship with the Wood family and described the incident as a random act of violence. During the criminal proceedings, Ellis entered a plea of not guilty by reason of insanity. However, after approximately 24 hours of deliberation, jurors found her guilty of all nine charges, including aggravated murder, attempted murder, felonious assault and endangering children. In October 2025, she received a sentence of life in prison without the possibility of parole.

At sentencing, Margot spoke about the profound pain of losing her son. Her words reflected the trauma of witnessing the attack and the permanent absence left behind by a child whose life had barely begun. She also expressed gratitude to those who had supported the family and honored Julian’s memory throughout the legal process. Prosecutors likewise acknowledged the family’s suffering, with Cuyahoga County Prosecutor Michael O’Malley expressing sympathy for their loss.

Ellis’s attorneys later challenged the conviction, arguing that a state expert had incorrectly explained the legal standard for an insanity defense and that the prosecutor had made improper remarks during closing arguments. But on October 8, 2026, Ohio’s Eighth District Court of Appeals rejected those arguments and upheld both the conviction and life sentence, according to reporting by Law&Crime and Cleveland NBC affiliate WKYC. The appellate ruling leaves the original judgment intact. For Julian’s family, the decision does not undo the tragedy or bring the little boy home, but it confirms that the conviction and punishment imposed in his case will stand.
