Army Veteran, 53, Dies After Brutal Nighttime Attack — Three People Convicted of Manslaughter

A night out in the English city of Hull ended in tragedy when Martin Chadburn, a 53-year-old Army veteran who also worked for a veterans’ charity, suffered fatal head injuries after a violent confrontation. Three people have now been convicted of manslaughter in connection with his death, while two other defendants were cleared of all charges.

According to The Sun, the incident began at around 3 a.m. as Chadburn was leaving a pub with his friend, Steven Grayburn. An argument involving a group of women escalated, and the situation became increasingly violent. The court heard that the group followed the two men as they attempted to walk away.

During the confrontation, 27-year-old Lukasz Matusiak punched Chadburn several times, knocking him to the ground. Prosecutors said 21-year-old Shaytoyia Farrow then stamped on him while he was lying on the ground. Britney Naylor, 20, was also involved in the incident.

Chadburn was taken to hospital, but his injuries proved fatal. He died two days later from a catastrophic brain injury caused by one or more blows to the head.

The trial heard competing accounts of what led to the violence. The defense argued that some of the defendants had acted in self-defense after an alleged exchange involving racist remarks and physical aggression. Evidence presented in court included CCTV footage and video recovered from a mobile phone.

Matusiak, Farrow and Naylor were found guilty of manslaughter but acquitted of murder. Bethany Naylor, 20, and Kristjan Suits, 35, were cleared of all charges. The three convicted defendants are due to be sentenced on November 27, 2026.

For Chadburn’s family and loved ones, the verdict marks a significant development in a case that ended with the loss of a man who had served in the Army and supported fellow veterans. However, no court outcome can reverse the devastating consequences of that night.

A senior investigating officer with Humberside Police stressed that a confrontation can escalate rapidly, with consequences that permanently change lives. The case serves as a tragic reminder of how quickly an argument can turn deadly.
