Beloved 65-Year-Old Swimmer Killed in Shark Attack Off South African Beach as Friends Pay Tribute

A 65-year-old woman has died after being attacked by a shark while swimming off South Africa’s southeastern coast, leaving her local swimming community devastated. The incident occurred on the morning of October 20, 2026, at Orient Beach in KuGompo City, formerly known as East London. Authorities have since closed nearby beaches as they investigate the fatal encounter.

The victim was identified in media reports as Janine Lochrenberg, a retired nuclear radiographer who was passionate about open-water swimming. Police were called to the beach at approximately 7 a.m. after the incident. When officers arrived, they found the woman with severe injuries. Witnesses said she had been swimming with a group when she signaled that she needed help.

Other swimmers rushed to assist and attempted to bring Lochrenberg to safety. However, witnesses described the injuries to her thigh and upper arm as severe. Despite the rescue efforts, she was pronounced dead on the beach. The species of shark involved has not been officially confirmed.

Lochrenberg was remembered as a familiar and valued member of the local swimming community. She was also associated with the Viva Musica Ensemble, where she played the viola. Friends and fellow swimmers described her as kind, intelligent and courageous, recalling her deep love of the ocean and the friendships she had built through swimming.

Following the attack, Buffalo City Metropolitan Municipality closed both Orient Beach and nearby Eastern Beach as a precaution. Police opened an inquest to establish the circumstances surrounding her death. Authorities urged members of the public to stay out of the affected waters and follow official safety notices while assessments continued.

The tragedy has renewed concern among local residents and swimmers, although fatal shark encounters remain relatively uncommon. For those who knew Lochrenberg, the loss is deeply personal: a woman remembered not for the circumstances of her death, but for her passion for the sea and the warmth she brought to her community.
