Beloved Grandmother, 60, Dies After Alleged Assault on Bus as Police Launch Manslaughter Investigation
A loving mother and grandmother has died after allegedly being assaulted during a confrontation with two women on a bus in Hartlepool, England. Ally Evans, 60, reportedly collapsed shortly after getting off the vehicle and seeking help at a nearby business. Her sudden death has devastated her family, including her two daughters, six grandchildren and her longtime partner, as police investigate the circumstances surrounding the incident.

Ally had boarded her usual No. 7 bus into town on the morning of Tuesday, October 13, intending to go about her day as normal. However, the journey reportedly took a frightening turn when an argument broke out between her and two women. According to her partner, Shaun Mathieson, 69, Ally sent him a text message explaining that she had become involved in a confrontation with the women while on the bus.
Police say an assault occurred during the incident, with other passengers reportedly attempting to intervene. Ally eventually got off at the next available stop and crossed the road to seek assistance. She entered a Coral bookmakers on York Road, where staff reportedly gave her a drink of water. But her condition soon deteriorated, and emergency services were called. Despite efforts to help her, Ally died inside the premises at around 10:45 a.m.
In a heartbreaking account of the final moments before her death, Shaun described waiting for Ally at the local library, where they regularly met to shop and spend time together. When she did not arrive, he tried calling her repeatedly. He eventually received word from an acquaintance who came rushing into the library with a message from Ally: she had been attacked and needed him.

Shaun rushed to the bookmakers, but by the time he arrived, police and ambulance crews were already at the scene. He waited outside for several hours, desperately hoping for news. Instead, he learned that the woman he had shared his life with for 16 years had died. “She was such a kind-hearted, bubbly, decent person,” he said, describing the devastating impact of losing her. He added that Ally lived for her family and friends, and that her death had been terrible for everyone who loved her.
Ally’s death has also raised questions about her health in the days leading up to the incident. Shaun said she had recently been receiving medical attention for heart-related concerns. However, he explained that a CT scan and MRI had reportedly cleared her of serious problems, and she had been relieved to learn that she only needed to return for a check-up six months later. The precise medical cause of her death has not yet been publicly established.
Cleveland Police have launched a manslaughter investigation and arrested a 26-year-old woman on suspicion of the offence. A Home Office post-mortem examination has been carried out, with further specialist pathology tests being conducted to help determine exactly how Ally died. The woman arrested has since been released on conditional bail while inquiries continue. No finding of guilt has been made, and detectives are continuing to establish the full circumstances of the confrontation.
For Ally’s family, the investigation comes amid profound grief and a desperate need for answers. A routine bus journey into town ended in a tragedy that has left two daughters without their mother, six grandchildren without their grandmother, and Shaun mourning the partner with whom he had shared 16 years of his life. As police continue their inquiries, those closest to Ally are left remembering a woman they describe as warm, lively and devoted to the people she loved.
