The basketball court had become a shallow brown lake, basketballs were drifting across the water, and on the lowest step of the bleachers one small puppy was standing on the last dry metal in the building.

Chest-mounted bodycam footage recorded on 28 September 2024 at 18:33:16 shows the moment a swift-water rescuer, kneeling on the wet steps in a bright orange rescue jacket and a climbing-style harness, comes face to face with a tiny tricolor beagle puppy stranded inside a flooded American school gymnasium. Muddy water covers the entire court, reflecting the ceiling lights, the basketball hoops and the flag on the far wall.

The puppy is soaked through. Its long ears hang heavy and dripping, its brown, black and white coat is plastered flat, and it stands very still on the slippery bleacher step, looking straight into the camera with wide, uncertain eyes.

Two hands, no sudden moves

Rather than reaching straight for the animal, the rescuer lets both black-gloved hands rise slowly into the puppy’s view, open and unhurried. The beagle’s ears twitch. It shifts its weight, takes one cautious half-step forward, and stays.

Only then do the hands close gently around it, one supporting its chest and the other beneath its belly, taking its full weight before its paws can slip on the wet metal.

Safe against the rescuer’s chest

Drawn down into the rescuer’s lap, the puppy settles against the orange jacket among the harness ropes and carabiners. Its breathing slows. Its head sinks lower and lower until its chin rests on the rescuer’s chest, eyes half closed, while the flooded court glitters behind them and a lone basketball drifts slowly across the water.

The bleacher step behind them stands empty. Somewhere above the waterline, a very small dog is dry, warm, and done being afraid.

It is a small rescue, measured in a single step of metal seating. For one beagle puppy, it was the whole world.
