Bodycam Captures the Tiniest Shopper: Rescuer Lifts a Soaked Calico Kitten Off a Checkout Counter in a Flooded Supermarket

The checkout counter was the only island left in the store. All around it, muddy floodwater swirled past fallen shopping baskets, floating oranges and pineapples, and shelves stripped by the current — and on the cold stainless steel of the conveyor counter, a tiny calico kitten crouched soaked to the skin, orange, black and white fur plastered flat, whiskers dripping, huge round eyes locked on the man wading toward her. His chest-mounted bodycam, timestamped 2024-10-06 16:24:51, recorded the entire rescue.
A Supermarket Turned Into a Lake
The footage opens from the rescuer’s point of view at the end of a checkout lane. He is standing in brown water inside a severely flooded grocery store, wearing a bright yellow waterproof flood-response jacket, black rubber rescue gloves, black waterproof pants and a tactical harness hung with metal clips. Through the glass entrance doors at the far end of the store, grey daylight and parked cars sit beyond the rain.
Between him and the doors, the store has come apart. Crates of oranges float in the aisles. A black plastic basket drifts on its side. Fruit bobs in the current running between the checkout counters, and the registers stand silent above the waterline.
On the nearest counter, above it all, sits the kitten — no bigger than the rescuer’s two hands, ears flattened by the wet, blinking nervously as she watches him approach.
Two Hands, One Careful Lift
Wading the last steps through the water, the rescuer raises both gloved hands slowly, palms open, giving the kitten time to read him. She lowers her head a little, wet ears twitching, but she does not run — there is nowhere to run to.
Then the hands arrive. One slides gently beneath her chest, the other supports her hindquarters, and she is lifted clear of the wet metal in a single careful motion, tiny paws curling as drops of water fall from her fur. He does not swing her up or turn away; he simply holds her low and secure in both cupped hands, right where she can see him, and she settles — still wide-eyed, but calmer — looking directly into the bodycam as the flooded store stretches out behind her.
Only the Store Makes a Sound
There is no music and no narration — just the building and the weather. Water sloshing around the counters, rain against the glass doors, a distant emergency siren, wet footsteps, the rustle of a waterproof jacket, and the kitten’s small, uncertain meows quieting as she is held.
