Boston Father Convicted of Sexually Abusing Teen Girl on Flight While Traveling With Wife and Four Children

A routine flight from Puerto Rico to Boston ended in a disturbing criminal case after a teenager captured evidence of unwanted sexual contact, leading to a federal jury conviction.

A 48-year-old Massachusetts father has been convicted of repeatedly sexually touching a 17-year-old girl aboard a JetBlue flight, despite traveling with his wife and four children.

Jonathan Alan Lefman, of Newton, Massachusetts, was found guilty on October 16, 2026, of one count of abusive sexual contact within the special aircraft jurisdiction of the United States, federal prosecutors announced.

The incident occurred on August 30, 2024, during a flight from San Juan, Puerto Rico, to Boston. According to prosecutors, Lefman was seated directly behind the teenage girl and repeatedly reached through the gap between the back and bottom of her seat to touch her buttocks without her consent.

The disturbing conduct reportedly continued during the flight and while passengers waited to leave the aircraft after landing.

Teenager Captured Crucial Evidence on Her Phone

According to federal prosecutors, the teenager noticed Lefman’s reflection leaning between the seats on the monitor in front of her.

During a later incident, she used her cellphone to record his fingers protruding through the gap between her seat and the seatback.

She also recorded Lefman as he exited the aircraft, preserving additional evidence that would help bring the incident to the attention of authorities.

After the plane landed, an adult female family member traveling with the teenager, but seated in a different row, reported the incident to a JetBlue supervisor.

The family member confronted Lefman and showed the footage of his fingers as evidence of the alleged conduct.

The teenager’s decision to document what was happening became a key element in the case, helping authorities investigate the allegations.

Federal Investigation Led to Jury Conviction

Lefman was arrested and charged in February 2025. A federal grand jury subsequently indicted him in March 2025.

Following a three-day jury trial, he was convicted of abusive sexual contact involving a minor aboard an aircraft.

U.S. Attorney Leah Foley emphasized that passengers should not have to fear sexual assault while traveling.

“The defendant repeatedly sexually abused a minor who was simply trying to travel safely aboard a commercial flight,” Foley said in a statement released by the U.S. Attorney’s Office.

FBI officials also praised the teenager’s courage in documenting the incident and cooperating with the process.

What Happens Next?

Lefman’s sentencing is scheduled for January 12, 2027, before U.S. District Judge Julia E. Kobick.

The federal charge carries a maximum penalty of two years in prison, five years to life of supervised release, and a fine of up to $250,000.

The actual sentence will be determined by the judge under applicable federal sentencing guidelines and statutes.

The conviction highlights the importance of protecting minors and holding offenders accountable, even in confined public spaces where victims may struggle to escape or seek immediate help.

For the teenager involved, documenting the incident and reporting it helped bring the case before a jury—and ultimately resulted in a guilty verdict.
