A late-night emergency call at an Indiana home led deputies to a disturbing scene: a man standing outside covered in blood, crying about his “baby,” while his longtime girlfriend lay dead inside the garage. Nearly three years after the fatal shooting, a jury has found the man guilty of murder, bringing a major development in a case that began with conflicting accounts of what happened during a domestic argument.

Bryce Michael Leighton, 37, was convicted of murdering his girlfriend, 48-year-old Tara Langley, in Monroe County, Indiana. The shooting happened in the early hours of November 4, 2023, at Langley’s home along East State Road 45. Deputies and emergency medical personnel arrived at approximately 1:30 a.m. after receiving reports of a disturbance. Outside the residence, they encountered Leighton with blood on his clothing and hands. According to the probable cause affidavit, he was yelling incoherently about his “baby” and appeared extremely distressed.

Inside the home’s attached garage, deputies discovered Langley’s body with blood pooled around her head. Investigators found an AR-15-style rifle and a civilian stun gun near her body. The rest of the house was reportedly in considerable disarray, with broken furniture, damaged appliances and shattered glass scattered throughout. A neighbor had contacted 911 after hearing a man shouting outside late at night, raising concerns about what was happening at the property.

During questioning, Leighton reportedly struggled to explain the events and said he was experiencing flashbacks. He later claimed that he had shot Langley in self-defense. According to his account, the couple had been arguing, and he was packing his belongings because he wanted to leave. He alleged that Langley had used a Taser against him, causing him to lose control of the situation. Leighton also described his girlfriend as aggressive when drinking. However, these were his claims, and prosecutors presented the case that ultimately persuaded the jury to convict him.

The couple had reportedly been together for approximately seven years before the shooting. Court records also revealed that Leighton had a previous criminal history involving a fatal vehicle collision in 2010. At the time, he was intoxicated and driving a stolen vehicle when he caused a head-on crash that killed 31-year-old taxi driver Gwendolynn Sanders. He had served time in prison for that incident before the 2023 shooting.

After hearing the evidence, a Monroe County jury found Leighton guilty of one count of murder. Circuit Judge Mary Ellen Diekhoff presided over the trial, and the Monroe County Prosecutor’s Office confirmed that sentencing is scheduled for December 2026. Leighton now faces decades behind bars for Langley’s death. The verdict closes an important chapter in the case, but for those who knew Langley, the outcome cannot undo the loss of a woman whose life ended inside her own home.
