California Couple Pleads Guilty to Murdering Teacher After 12-Year-Old Daughter Testifies Against Her Mother and Stepfather
A California couple has admitted responsibility for the killing of a beloved teacher after a heartbreaking courtroom testimony from the woman’s 12-year-old daughter helped bring the case to a turning point. Misty Rose Gomez and her husband, Antonio Garcia, pleaded guilty to second-degree murder on November 3, 2026, in connection with the death of 37-year-old Geoffrey Bernardi, a Clovis educator who was brutally attacked in December 2025. Their guilty pleas came just one day after Gomez’s daughter took the witness stand and testified that her mother had confessed to being involved in Bernardi’s death.

Bernardi was found severely beaten near a canal in Clovis, California, in the early hours of December 18, 2025. He was rushed to a hospital, but his injuries were too severe, and he died less than two days later. Investigators said he had been dating Gomez, who was married to Garcia at the time. According to prosecutors, Garcia carried out the physical attack while Gomez helped orchestrate the crime. Authorities have also said the assault was not random, although the full circumstances and motive were not all publicly established in the reports.
The case took an emotional turn when Gomez’s 12-year-old daughter testified about what happened after the attack. The girl told the court that her mother eventually admitted that she and Garcia had killed Bernardi. She also described how she and her younger sister were taken from California to Mexico under the impression that they were going on a vacation. The children reportedly believed they were traveling to Los Angeles and visiting Universal Studios before discovering that they were being taken across the border. Prosecutors argued that the trip was part of the couple’s effort to flee after Bernardi was attacked. The girl’s testimony was especially significant because it offered the court an account of what Gomez allegedly told her after the killing.
After the attack, Gomez and Garcia fled to Mexico, where they were arrested by U.S. Marshals in August 2026 following an extensive investigation. The couple was returned to California to face murder charges. Investigators had previously alleged that Gomez told authorities Bernardi had been attacked by a homeless man. The prosecution later presented evidence and testimony that contradicted that account. Bernardi’s mother, Erin Adams, also testified about the devastating impact of her son’s death and said the young girl’s testimony helped change the course of the case. She described her family as shattered by the loss.
Bernardi was more than a teacher. He worked in career technical education for the Clovis Unified School District and was also an experienced stagehand and sound technician who loved theater, music and the arts. His family remembered him as someone who was building a life around work he loved and people he cared about. His mother recalled that he had been excited about his relationship with Gomez and did not know she was married. The revelation of the circumstances surrounding his death made the loss even more painful for his loved ones.
Following the guilty pleas, Gomez is expected to receive a sentence of 15 years to life in prison, while Garcia is expected to receive 16 years to life. Their sentencing is scheduled for December 4, 2026. The case has also raised concerns about the two young girls who were taken to Mexico and separated from their extended families during the months their mother and stepfather were on the run. For Bernardi’s family, the guilty pleas represent a major step toward accountability, but they cannot undo the loss of a son whose life ended violently at just 37 years old.
