Engaged Couple Killed by Alleged Drunk Driver Near LSU Campus Just Months After Planning Their Future Together
A young couple who were preparing to spend their lives together have died after being struck by a vehicle near Louisiana State University (LSU) in Baton Rouge, Louisiana. Leah Fonte and Shane Hirstius, both 21, were walking along Nicholson Drive early on October 18, 2026, when a vehicle allegedly veered off the road and hit them. What should have been an ordinary night celebrating with friends instead became a devastating tragedy for their families and the community.

According to the Baton Rouge Police Department, the crash happened at approximately 2:40 a.m. in the 5000 block of Nicholson Drive. Investigators allege that 20-year-old Mia Camille Dawson was driving a 2016 Nissan Rogue southbound when she left the roadway and struck the couple as they walked along the right shoulder. Leah died at the scene, while Shane was rushed to a local hospital, where he later succumbed to his injuries.
Police say Dawson allegedly left the scene following the collision but was later located and taken into custody. According to an arrest affidavit cited by local media, she failed several roadside sobriety tests, and a breath test reportedly recorded a blood alcohol concentration of 0.048%. Because Dawson was under 21, that result exceeded Louisiana’s legal limit for underage drivers. She was booked into the East Baton Rouge Parish Prison on multiple charges, including vehicular homicide, hit-and-run driving, reckless operation, and operating while impaired. The allegations have not been proven in court, and the investigation remains ongoing.
For Leah and Shane, the future had once seemed full of possibilities. The couple, both from Metairie, Louisiana, became engaged in 2025 and had planned to marry in March 2028. Leah was a senior at LSU studying biological sciences and working toward a career in dentistry. Her university expressed sadness over the loss, offering condolences to her family and everyone who knew her.
Shane was a firefighter and operator with the Third District Volunteer Fire Department in River Ridge, Louisiana. His colleagues remembered him as a dedicated first responder with a generous heart, an unforgettable smile, and a genuine desire to help others. Assistant Fire Chief Alex Gorman said the couple had been celebrating a friend’s birthday when the crash occurred. He described their relationship as one filled with love, dreams, and endless possibilities, expressing sorrow that both lives had been taken so soon.
As tributes continue to emerge, the couple’s families, friends, university community, and fellow firefighters are left to grieve two young lives cut short. Leah and Shane had been looking forward to building a future together, but their wedding plans will never come to pass. Authorities continue investigating the fatal collision as their loved ones remember them for their kindness, warmth, and the happiness they brought to those around them.
