Florida Fisherman, 71, Killed by 12-Foot Alligator After Slipping While Trying to Escape: “It Just Snatched Him”

Steven Hamilton was proudly showing off his latest catch at a Florida lake when a massive alligator emerged from the water. As he tried to escape, one sudden slip proved fatal.

A peaceful evening of fishing ended in tragedy when a 71-year-old Florida fisherman was attacked and killed by a massive, 12-foot alligator after reportedly slipping while attempting to flee the approaching predator.

Steven Hamilton, a longtime fisherman and musician from Orlando, was at Dr. Bradford Memorial Park along Lake Apopka on Friday evening, October 16, when the deadly encounter unfolded.

Hamilton had just caught a bass and was posing for a photograph with his catch when he heard an alligator approaching from the water. Realizing the danger, he attempted to run away from the enormous reptile.

But in a terrifying turn of events, Hamilton reportedly lost his footing along the shoreline. The alligator seized the opportunity, grabbed his leg and dragged him into the lake.

Witness Jason Handley later described the horrifying moment, saying Hamilton slipped as he tried to escape.

“He slipped and fell, and the gator grabbed him and dragged him into the water. It just snatched him in there,” Handley recalled.

The attack happened in seconds, leaving witnesses scrambling to respond as the fisherman disappeared beneath the water. <Cite refs={[“turn618911news10″,”turn618911search0”]}/>

Bystanders Tried Desperately to Stop the Attack

As the alligator dragged Hamilton into the lake, people nearby reportedly attempted to frighten the animal away by throwing traffic cones toward it.

However, they were unable to approach closely enough to rescue him safely. Lake Apopka is known for its substantial alligator population, making the situation particularly dangerous for anyone entering the water.

Hamilton’s body was recovered approximately two hours after the attack, at around 7 p.m.

An autopsy found blunt-force injuries to his leg, according to reports cited by the New York Post. The circumstances surrounding the incident have highlighted the risks of standing close to the water’s edge in areas where large alligators are present. <Cite refs={[“turn618911news10″,”turn618911search0”]}/>

“He Was Always Fishing There”

For those who knew Hamilton, the tragedy was difficult to comprehend.

Handley described him as a cheerful, friendly man who regularly visited the park to fish and enjoyed showing others what he had caught.

“He always had positive things to say,” Handley recalled.

Hamilton was a familiar face at the lake, where fishing had become part of his routine. What began as another ordinary outing ended in a sudden and devastating loss.

The tragedy has also left a chilling impression on Handley, who said he had experienced a close encounter with an alligator at the same park just days earlier.

He recalled finding an alligator near his foot and striking it on the head with a fishing net to move it away.

“I told my girlfriend, somebody is going to get ate by one of these gators,” he said.

His recollection now carries a particularly disturbing significance following Hamilton’s death.

Lake Apopka’s Hidden Danger

Lake Apopka, located northwest of Orlando, is known for its abundant wildlife, including a large population of American alligators.

Although alligators are a natural part of Florida’s ecosystem, they can pose a serious threat when people stand too close to the shoreline or enter waters where the animals are present.

The danger is not always immediately apparent. Alligators can
