Florida Mom Arrested at Airport After Allegedly Leaving Four Children Home Alone During Las Vegas Trip

A Florida mother was arrested as she stepped off a plane after allegedly leaving her four children home alone for several days while traveling to Las Vegas for work. The case came to light when one of the children called 911 after her 9-year-old brother was injured by a falling dumbbell, prompting deputies to discover that no adult was supervising the children.

Irene Miller Arrested

Irene Miller, 50, was arrested on October 23 after returning to Florida, according to the Osceola County Sheriff’s Office. Authorities said she faces four counts of child neglect without great bodily harm. Body camera footage captured the moment deputies approached her as she exited the plane and took her into custody.

The investigation began on the evening of October 21, when deputies responded to a home on Parkway Boulevard in Kissimmee shortly after 8:30 p.m. A child had called for help after reporting that a dumbbell had fallen on her 9-year-old brother’s head. When officers arrived, they found four children, ages 9, 11, 12 and 14, inside the home without an adult present.

The injured boy was taken to a nearby hospital for treatment and was later released. Investigators then contacted Miller by phone to find out why the children had been left alone. According to authorities, she said she was in Las Vegas for work and had arranged for a babysitter to help care for the children during the day.

Miller reportedly told deputies that the babysitter, who traveled from Tampa, would help the children get ready for school in the mornings and check on them after school. However, the caregiver did not stay overnight, leaving the children without adult supervision during those hours, according to the sheriff’s office.

Authorities said Miller had left Florida on October 18 and was scheduled to return on October 23. After deputies contacted the children’s father, he agreed to take the four children into his care. Detectives then arranged to meet Miller when she arrived back in Florida and arrested her at the airport.

Osceola County Sheriff Chris Blackmon said in a statement that authorities would investigate reports of child neglect and hold responsible parties accountable. Miller’s arrest does not constitute a conviction, and the allegations will be addressed through the legal process.

The case has raised concerns about the risks children can face when left without overnight supervision, even when arrangements have been made for someone to check on them during the day. Investigators have not publicly detailed all the evidence in the case, and further court proceedings will determine how the allegations are resolved.
