Nearly five weeks after Hayden Panettiere’s sudden death, her closest friends, former co-stars and family members gathered in Malibu for an intimate celebration of the actress’s life.

The private memorial took place on Saturday, September 19, bringing together people from different chapters of Panettiere’s career and personal life. Among those photographed attending were her former Nashville co-star Connie Britton, as well as Ruby Rose, Evan Ross, Paris Hilton and other friends and colleagues.

Panettiere died on August 16 at the age of 36 after she was found unresponsive at a residence in Greenville, South Carolina.

The memorial offered those who knew her an opportunity to remember her beyond the circumstances of her death — through music, stories, photographs and personal memories.

A PRIVATE EVENING IN MALIBU
The ceremony was held at Malibu Pacific Church, a location that carried particular significance because of Panettiere’s love of the ocean and whales.

Reports differ slightly on the number of people who attended, with some accounts putting the gathering at around 80 close friends and others reporting approximately 150 guests overall.

On September 22, the coroner determined that Panettiere’s death was accidental and resulted from the effects of fentanyl and cocaine, with oxycodone also detected.

She had been found unresponsive and in cardiac arrest at a South Carolina residence on August 16.

The coroner’s determination significantly changed the status of the investigation from the uncertainty that existed when the memorial was held.

Earlier reporting had focused on whether a counterfeit or illicitly obtained prescription pill may have played a role. Those reports were based on investigative sources and should be distinguished from the later official determination by the coroner.

The official finding now provides a clearer medical explanation for her death.

THE INVESTIGATION HAD ALSO REACHED LOS ANGELES
Before the official cause was announced, investigators had been examining the possibility that drugs obtained in Los Angeles played a role in Panettiere’s death.

Reports indicated that authorities were investigating the source of pills she may have obtained and examining communications connected to a suspected drug supplier.

The investigation involved activity in both South Carolina and Los Angeles.

The fact that investigators were examining the source of drugs did not mean that every person connected to Panettiere had been accused of causing her death.

Authorities had also reported no evidence of foul play contributing to the death.
