Heartbreaking Final Footage Shows Hiker Warning of Deadly Drop Moments Before Falling 260 Feet to His Death

A Brazilian man tragically lost his life after filming himself beside a towering waterfall and warning about the fatal consequences of falling from its edge. Mauricio Marques Gomes, a 32-year-old mechanic from Macaé, near Rio de Janeiro, was on a solo hike at Cachoeira da Fortuna, also known as Fortune Waterfall, in Corrego do Ouro, southern Brazil, when the fatal accident occurred. Footage recorded shortly before his death has since drawn attention to the dangers of approaching the edge of powerful waterfalls.

Mauricio had visited the natural attraction on Sunday, during a public holiday honoring Brazil’s patron saint. The waterfall plunges approximately 260 feet, creating a dramatic but hazardous landscape. In a video he reportedly shared on his WhatsApp status, Mauricio stood near the edge and looked down at the steep drop below him. He appeared to acknowledge the danger, remarking that someone who fell from that height would be unlikely to survive.

The footage has become especially heartbreaking because Mauricio seemed aware of just how dangerous the location was. According to reports, he intended to leave his phone recording while attempting to cross a rock covered in slippery algae. The surface may have appeared manageable, but wet rocks near waterfalls can be treacherous, particularly when spray and moisture make it difficult to maintain a firm footing. What was intended to be a recording of his hike became part of the investigation into his final moments.

When Mauricio failed to return, friends grew increasingly concerned. They began searching for him that evening, with the effort continuing late into the night. Shortly after midnight, his body was discovered submerged in the pool at the base of the waterfall. Firefighters were called to recover him from the water, bringing a tragic end to the search.

Investigators believe Mauricio may have slipped near the edge and struck his head against a rock as he fell. Forensic examiners reportedly concluded that he died from injuries sustained in the fall. His mobile phone was found at the top of the waterfall, still containing the footage recorded before the accident. The available reports do not establish every detail of the fall, but investigators believe the injuries were consistent with a fatal plunge from the height of the falls.

The tragedy has also renewed concern about the risks faced by hikers who approach steep cliffs and waterfalls to take photographs or record videos. Such places can create a false sense of security, especially when visitors see others standing close to the edge. Yet a small slip, an unstable foothold or an unexpected movement can have devastating consequences. Near a waterfall, the force of the water and the difficulty of reaching someone who has fallen can make rescue efforts particularly challenging.

Mauricio’s death comes amid reports of another fatal waterfall accident involving 27-year-old tourist Valentina Stragliotto, who died after falling nearly 100 feet from a waterfall in Ella, Sri Lanka. She was reportedly travelling with a friend when she slipped from a boulder. The two incidents occurred in different countries, but both highlight the dangers of uneven, slippery surfaces around natural attractions.

For Mauricio’s friends and loved ones, the loss is devastating. A routine outdoor adventure ended in a tragedy that no one anticipated, despite the warning signs visible in the landscape. His final recording has become a stark reminder that even a brief moment near a dangerous drop can carry irreversible consequences. Authorities continue to examine the circumstances surrounding the incident, while the tragedy serves as a sobering warning to visitors to keep a safe distance from waterfall edges and avoid attempting risky crossings on slippery rocks.
