Husband Manipulated His Own Daughter to Cover Up Wife’s Murder — Then Nearly Got Away With It

A British man who murdered his wife and manipulated their young daughter into helping cover up the killing was eventually brought to justice after years of painful silence. Robert Rhodes was convicted of murdering Dawn Rhodes after initially persuading a jury that her death resulted from an act of self-defense. The disturbing case is now being revisited in the true-crime documentary Britain’s Countryside Killers.

Dawn met Robert in the 1990s, when she was 18 and he was around 21. The couple married and had two children, but their relationship reportedly deteriorated over time. Investigators later described Robert as controlling, saying he criticized Dawn’s appearance, demeaned her in front of relatives and wanted to know what she was doing. The marriage became increasingly strained as Dawn sought affection elsewhere.

The situation escalated around Christmas Eve 2015, when Robert discovered that Dawn was having an affair with a colleague. Dawn admitted the relationship and told him she wanted a divorce. Prosecutors later argued that Robert became consumed by jealousy and began planning to kill her. In 2016, he allegedly involved their daughter in a plan designed to make the killing appear to have happened during a violent domestic confrontation.

According to investigators, the child was manipulated into helping lure her mother into a vulnerable situation. After Dawn was fatally attacked, Robert allegedly staged the scene to support his claim that he had acted in self-defense. He inflicted injuries on himself and their daughter, further reinforcing the false account. The daughter initially supported his version of events, leaving authorities unable to secure a murder conviction at the first trial.

For years, the girl carried the truth in silence. As she grew older and received therapy, she eventually disclosed what had really happened. Her account helped reopen the case, and Robert was arrested again in 2024. At his second trial, the jury found him guilty of murder, child cruelty, perverting the course of justice and two counts of perjury.

In January 2026, Robert Rhodes was sentenced to life imprisonment, with a minimum term of 29 years and six months before he can be considered for release. The case exposed not only the devastating consequences of domestic abuse and coercive control but also the lasting psychological burden placed on a child manipulated into concealing a parent’s murder.
