Nearly six years after Texas State University student Jason Landry vanished while driving home for Christmas, authorities have finally confirmed what happened to the missing student’s remains.

DNA testing has identified skeletal remains discovered in Caldwell County, Texas, as those of Landry, bringing an end to one of the most closely watched missing-person cases in the area.

But the identification has not answered every question.

Investigators still do not know exactly how Landry died, and authorities say the remains have provided no additional information about the cause or manner of death.

Officials also said they have found no indication of foul play at this time.

DNA FINALLY CONFIRMS THE IDENTITY
A local resident discovered human remains on September 8, 2026, in Caldwell County.

The remains were found east of Salt Flat Road, between Soda Springs Road and Biggs Road, in a rural area near Luling.

The discovery initially raised questions about whether the remains could belong to Landry, who had disappeared from the area in December 2020.

The University of North Texas Center for Human Identification subsequently conducted DNA testing.

The Texas Attorney General’s Office announced on September 23 that the testing conclusively confirmed the remains belonged to Jason Landry.

Landry was 21 when he disappeared.

His family has now received the confirmation they had spent almost six years waiting for.

HE DISAPPEARED AFTER A CRASH
Landry disappeared on December 13, 2020, while traveling from Texas State University in San Marcos to his family’s home in Missouri City for Christmas.

He was driving a 2003 Nissan Altima.

Shortly after midnight, his vehicle was discovered crashed and abandoned on Salt Flat Road near Luling.

The circumstances immediately appeared unusual.

The vehicle’s lights were still on, while Landry was nowhere to be found.

His cellphone and wallet were recovered, and some of his clothing and other personal belongings were discovered scattered around the area.

His cellphone and wallet were also found.

Landry’s disappearance triggered repeated searches involving law enforcement officers, professional search teams and volunteers.

The Texas Attorney General’s Cold Case and Missing Persons Unit became involved in 2022.

The unit worked with the Caldwell County Sheriff’s Office, Texas Department of Public Safety and Texas Search and Rescue.

Ground searches, aerial searches and reviews of previously collected evidence were conducted over the years.

Authorities also followed new leads and repeatedly reexamined the circumstances surrounding Landry’s disappearance.

According to reports, approximately 30 search operations were conducted during the nearly six years he remained missing.

Yet Landry’s remains remained undiscovered.

THE DISCOVERY CAME NEAR THE ORIGINAL SEARCH AREA
The location where the remains were found is one of the most intriguing aspects of the latest development.

The remains were discovered in the broader rural area near where Landry’s vehicle was found, but reports indicate they were about five miles from the crash site.

That distance has raised a new question: how did Landry end up there after his car was abandoned?
