MAN PLEADS GUILTY IN DEADLY ATTACK ON WOMAN HIKING ALONE IN ARIZONA
More than three years after 29-year-old Lauren Heike was found dead along a hiking trail in Phoenix, Arizona, the case has reached a major turning point.

Zion Teasley, 25, has pleaded guilty to first-degree murder in connection with Heike’s death. The plea brings an end to a case that began in April 2023, when Heike went for a hike alone on the Reach 11 trail in north Phoenix and was attacked from behind. Her body was discovered the following day by a woman who was walking her dog.
Investigators later pieced together a disturbing series of clues. Surveillance footage reportedly showed a man following Heike before chasing her along the trail. Authorities said she was ultimately found with 15 stab wounds, while evidence collected during the investigation—including DNA found on her shoe and cellphone-related evidence—helped connect Teasley to the crime.

According to court documents, Teasley had reportedly been fired from a job not long before the killing after allegations involving aggressive behavior toward female coworkers and suspected theft. Investigators also learned that he routinely carried a pocketknife, with the blade size reportedly consistent with the injuries discovered during Heike’s autopsy.
The case had previously carried the possibility of the death penalty. Under the plea agreement, however, Teasley will avoid a death sentence and is expected to receive life in prison. His sentencing is scheduled for Dec. 4, 2026.
For Heike’s family, the guilty plea means they will not have to endure a lengthy trial and hear the painful details of the case in court. In a statement, her family said that while no sentence could bring Lauren back, they felt relief knowing the man responsible would not have another opportunity to hurt someone else.
But one major question remains: What led to the attack, and what happened during Lauren’s final moments on that trail?
Read the full story for the latest details about the investigation, the evidence that linked Teasley to the case, and what happens next.
