MAN PLEADS GUILTY TO KILLING JOGGER WHILE ON PROBATION — HIS OWN WORDS ABOUT ‘SALVATION’ RAISED MORE QUESTIONS
A man who was on probation when 29-year-old Lauren Heike was killed on an Arizona hiking trail has pleaded guilty to first-degree murder, bringing a long-running case to a dramatic turning point.

Zion Teasley, 25, admitted killing Heike in April 2023 as part of a plea agreement that spares him the possibility of the death penalty. He is scheduled to receive a natural life sentence, with formal sentencing set for December 4.
Lauren had gone out for a jog near her Phoenix home on April 28, 2023. When she failed to show up for work, friends became concerned and reported her missing. The following day, her body was discovered in a desert area near a hiking trail.
Investigators later reconstructed part of her final moments through surveillance footage. According to court documents, video showed a man later identified as Teasley following Lauren along the trail before both disappeared from view. Detectives said the suspect then ran from the area and later returned near where Lauren’s body was found.
Forensic evidence also became a crucial part of the investigation. Police said DNA recovered from one of Lauren’s shoes matched Teasley. An autopsy determined that she had suffered multiple stab wounds, while defensive injuries indicated she had tried to protect herself during the attack.
But the case became even more disturbing when investigators looked into Teasley’s background.

At the time Lauren was killed, Teasley was on probation after previously serving prison time for armed robbery and other felony offenses. Investigators also learned that he had recently been fired from a job after allegedly behaving aggressively toward female employees. His manager reportedly told detectives that surveillance footage from the day of the murder showed Teasley wearing clothing believed to have been stolen from the store.
After his arrest, Teasley reportedly spoke with investigators about his religious beliefs and his internal struggles. According to an affidavit, detectives wrote that he was “concerned about the salvation of his soul” because of thoughts he had been experiencing.
When investigators asked whether he had planned to kill Lauren, he reportedly denied that he was someone who would plan such an act. Yet prosecutors ultimately charged him with first-degree murder, and the case continued toward a potential death-penalty trial.
Now, that trial will never happen.
Teasley has accepted a plea deal that will keep him in prison for life. Lauren’s family said they supported the agreement because, although no sentence can bring her back, they are relieved knowing he will never be released and cannot harm another family.
For Lauren’s loved ones, the guilty plea ends years of waiting for answers — but it cannot erase the questions surrounding why a young woman simply out for a run became the victim of a seemingly random and terrifying attack.
Why was Lauren followed that day? What was going through Teasley’s mind during those final moments? And how was a man already on probation able to cross paths with her on that trail?
