Massachusetts Politician Suspends Campaign After Alleged Drunk-Driving Crash Involving Five Cars

A Massachusetts political campaign has taken an unexpected turn after Republican lieutenant governor candidate Shawn Oliver suspended his run for office following his arrest in connection with a crash that involved five vehicles. The incident, which occurred late Saturday night in New Bedford, has drawn widespread attention just weeks before the state’s November election.

Oliver, 42, is a New Bedford city councilor and a corrections officer. According to police reports cited by local media, officers responded at around 11:40 p.m. on October 17 to a crash on Dartmouth Street. The vehicle Oliver was driving allegedly struck several parked cars before overturning. Five vehicles were involved, and two reportedly sustained extensive damage. Oliver suffered injuries and was taken to a local hospital for treatment.

Following an investigation at the scene and at the hospital, Oliver was arrested and charged with operating under the influence of alcohol, negligent operation of a motor vehicle, a marked-lanes violation, and speeding. He was later released from custody after spending less than three hours in jail, according to reports. He was expected to appear in New Bedford District Court on October 19. The charges are allegations, and the case will proceed through the legal system.

On Sunday, October 18, Oliver announced on social media that he was suspending his campaign for lieutenant governor. In his statement, he said he had made the decision after careful reflection and did not want personal matters to overshadow the election. He also thanked those who had supported his campaign and asked for privacy for his family during what he described as a difficult time.

The announcement came after Republican gubernatorial candidate Mike Minogue, Oliver’s running mate, publicly called on him to step aside. Minogue expressed disappointment over the incident and stressed that there is no excuse for driving under the influence. He also said he would formally seek Oliver’s resignation if elected governor and indicated that he was willing to help Oliver address the situation.

The crash has created a major setback for the Republican ticket as the November 3 election approaches. Oliver’s decision to suspend his campaign leaves questions about the political consequences of the incident and what comes next for his public role. New Bedford Mayor Jon Mitchell also described the allegations as deeply concerning, saying the public deserves an explanation of what happened.

For now, the case remains a legal matter, with the allegations still to be addressed in court. The incident has also renewed attention on the serious risks associated with impaired driving, which can endanger not only the driver but also other people on the road. As the investigation and legal proceedings continue, Oliver’s political future remains uncertain.
