Minnesota Man Accused of Stabbing Sleeping Roommate After 10 Months Living Together — Then Calls Sister Saying, “I’ve Had It With This Place”

A Minnesota man is facing attempted murder charges after allegedly breaking into his roommate’s bedroom and repeatedly stabbing him while he was asleep. The victim suffered life-threatening injuries and required hours of emergency surgery. But what caught investigators’ attention was what allegedly happened immediately afterward: the suspect called his sister in the middle of the night, telling her, “I’ve had it with this place,” before asking her to come pick him up.
Antonio Baumgartner, 30, was identified as the suspect in the October 29, 2026, attack in Bloomington, Minnesota. According to a criminal complaint, officers responding to the home found the victim covered in blood, holding a towel against his injuries. Despite the severity of his condition, the man was conscious enough to identify his roommate as the person who had attacked him. He told police that the two had been living together for approximately 10 months.
The victim reportedly said he had been sleeping when he heard loud pounding on his bedroom door. Baumgartner allegedly entered the room and began stabbing him without warning. The victim described the assault as unprovoked, telling investigators that he had no idea why his roommate had attacked him. Police initially noticed two serious wounds to his arm before discovering another severe injury to his abdomen. The victim was rushed for medical treatment, where doctors reportedly spent approximately six hours performing surgery to repair the damage.
Investigators then began tracing Baumgartner’s movements after the attack. According to the complaint, he called his sister at approximately 2:20 a.m. and told her he had had enough of the place. He asked her to come and collect him from the residence. During their conversation, his sister reportedly expressed concern because she believed he had been using drugs that night. Her account became an important part of the investigation as officers attempted to establish what happened after the stabbing.
Baumgartner did not remain at the home. Police later located him at the scene of a separate reported break-in and took him into custody. Officers reportedly noticed blood on his pants when they found him. Investigators connected him to the stabbing through the victim’s identification and the surrounding evidence. The motive for the alleged attack has not been publicly established, and authorities have not confirmed whether suspected drug use played any role in the incident.
Baumgartner, who is being held at the Hennepin County Jail, faces charges including attempted second-degree murder and assault. His bail was set at $1 million, and he was scheduled to appear in court on November 2, 2026. The victim’s survival after such serious injuries has brought some relief to an incident that could have ended very differently. However, the case remains in its early legal stages, and Baumgartner is presumed innocent unless proven guilty in court.
