Mother and Daughter Found Dead After Suspected Grizzly Bear Attack During Walk Near Their Canadian Home

A mother and daughter who went out for what was supposed to be a familiar afternoon walk near their home in British Columbia, Canada, have both been found dead following a suspected bear attack. The heartbreaking discovery has devastated their family and shocked the small community of Bella Coola, where residents are now being urged to stay away from the trail as wildlife officers investigate.

The victims were identified by relatives as 48-year-old Jennifer Balcarras and her daughter, Selah Reed. The pair reportedly went for a walk along the Snooka West Trail on Saturday, October 31, 2026. It was an area they knew well, located only a short distance from their home. When neither woman returned or responded to messages, family members became increasingly worried. They were officially reported missing on Sunday, November 1, prompting police and search-and-rescue teams to begin looking for them.

The search took a devastating turn on Monday afternoon, November 2, when Jennifer’s remains were discovered in the trail area. Evidence at the scene suggested that an animal may have been involved, prompting the British Columbia Conservation Officer Service to join the investigation. The search continued into the following day, when Selah’s remains were found on Tuesday afternoon. The discovery ended the family’s desperate hope of finding the younger woman alive.

Jennifer was remembered as a devoted mother of four who worked as an art therapist in Bella Coola. Her family described her as a creative and compassionate woman who loved books, painting, music and the outdoors. Selah, her youngest daughter, worked as an educational assistant and was also pursuing online studies. She shared many of her mother’s interests, particularly hiking, art and ballet. Relatives described the two as exceptionally close, saying they often spent time together and were rarely apart when exploring the outdoors.

Investigators suspect a grizzly bear may have been responsible, but authorities have not yet publicly confirmed the exact animal involved or released a final determination of the cause of death. Wildlife officers have deployed traps in an effort to locate any bears connected to the incident. Officials said that if an animal is captured and confirmed to be responsible, it will be killed in accordance with provincial wildlife-safety guidelines. Members of the public have been warned to avoid the Snooka West Trail area while the investigation continues.

The tragedy has also brought painful memories back to Bella Coola. Nearly a year earlier, a grizzly bear attacked a group of schoolchildren and teachers in the same community, injuring 11 people, including several children who suffered serious injuries. Nuxalk Nation Chief Samuel Schooner expressed condolences to the victims’ family and the wider community, acknowledging the emotional impact of another suspected bear attack. For Jennifer and Selah’s loved ones, however, the immediate priority is grieving two lives lost during what should have been an ordinary walk close to home. Their family’s search for answers continues as wildlife officers work to establish exactly what happened on the trail.
