Motorcyclist in His 60s Dies in M27 Crash as Major Motorway Closure Triggers Hours of Traffic Chaos

A motorcyclist in his 60s has died following a serious crash on the M27 in Hampshire, prompting an extensive motorway closure and leaving drivers facing major delays during the morning rush. Emergency services rushed to the scene early on Friday, October 16, after a collision involving a white Triumph motorcycle on the eastbound carriageway near Portsmouth. The tragic incident triggered a large-scale response from police and National Highways as investigators worked to establish exactly what had happened.

Hampshire and Isle of Wight Constabulary said officers were called at approximately 6:39 a.m. to reports of a collision between Junction 11, near Fareham, and Junction 12, which connects to the M275 toward Portsmouth. The motorcyclist was pronounced dead at the scene. His next of kin have since been notified and are receiving support, while authorities have not publicly released his name.

The severity of the incident led officials to close the eastbound carriageway between Junction 9 at Whiteley and Junction 12 at Portsmouth, covering a stretch of approximately eight miles. The closure remained in place for several hours while emergency crews attended the scene and police carried out investigative work. National Highways confirmed that traffic within the affected section was eventually released, but the road remained closed while officers completed their inquiries.

The disruption quickly spread beyond the immediate crash site. Drivers approaching the closure encountered queues, with delays reported on the westbound side as well. National Highways initially warned motorists to expect delays of around 20 minutes on the approach, although disruption varied as traffic built up and alternative routes became busier. Commuters and other road users were urged to allow extra time for their journeys or consider postponing travel where possible.

Motorists heading eastbound were directed to leave the M27 at Junction 9 and follow diversion signs along the A27 through the Fareham area toward Portchester and Portsmouth. The diversion added pressure to local roads as drivers sought ways around the closed motorway. Authorities advised road users to follow official signs and check traffic updates before setting off, particularly if their journeys involved the affected stretch.

Police have launched an investigation into the fatal collision and are appealing for anyone who witnessed the crash or has relevant dashcam footage to come forward. Investigators are seeking information that could help reconstruct the moments leading up to the incident and establish the circumstances in which the motorcycle was involved. No further details about the cause of the crash had been confirmed in the initial police appeal.

The motorway was subsequently reopened after the investigation at the scene, bringing an end to the major closure. However, the loss of life remains the central concern as the victim’s family faces the sudden tragedy. Police continue to encourage witnesses to contact them on 101, quoting reference number 44260508127, as they work to determine how the fatal collision occurred.
