“My Daddy Is Gonna Die”: Woman Sentenced to 20 Years for Stabbing Boyfriend While His Children Were Home

An Alabama woman has been sentenced to 20 years in prison after admitting to fatally stabbing her boyfriend in an incident witnessed by his young daughter. The case took a heartbreaking turn when the 9-year-old girl called emergency services, desperately asking for help as her father lay seriously injured. During the call, the child reportedly cried out, “My daddy is gonna die,” as she tried to get responders to the scene.

Jennifer Nicole Heathcoe, 34, pleaded guilty to intentional murder in the death of her boyfriend, 33-year-old Taylor Rawlins. The fatal stabbing occurred on August 22, 2024, at the Charleston Apartments in Mobile, Alabama. Heathcoe had originally faced a capital murder charge and was expected to stand trial before entering her guilty plea on October 19, 2026. She was subsequently sentenced to two decades behind bars.

In the immediate aftermath of the stabbing, Rawlins’ 9-year-old daughter called 911 from inside the apartment. According to the call transcript reported by local station WALA, the girl told the dispatcher that her stepmother had stabbed her father and pleaded for emergency assistance. The child was reportedly in her room during the call as she tried to explain what had happened.

Investigators said Heathcoe could be heard during the emergency call apparently urging the child to tell the dispatcher that someone else was responsible. Prosecutors viewed the alleged attempt to influence the girl’s account as significant evidence in the case. Heathcoe also made a separate 911 call, describing a dispute before the stabbing and suggesting that other people had fled the scene. Those details raised questions about her initial account of the incident.

At the beginning of the case, Heathcoe’s defense had argued that she was in a volatile and violent relationship and believed she needed to protect herself. Her father also publicly supported the self-defense explanation. However, Heathcoe ultimately pleaded guilty to intentional murder, bringing the case to a conclusion without the trial that had been scheduled for that week.

Rawlins was remembered by his family as a devoted father of two children who brought warmth, humor and joy to those around him. His death left his children without their father and placed his young daughter at the center of a traumatic emergency. His obituary also encouraged greater awareness of domestic violence and the importance of helping families facing dangerous situations.

With Heathcoe’s guilty plea and 20-year sentence, the criminal case has reached a major milestone. But the distressing 911 call remains a painful reminder of the children caught in the aftermath of the fatal incident.
