Newborn Baby, Just 12 Days Old, Dies After Falling Avocado Strikes His Head Outside Nursery

A family in Argentina has been left devastated after their newborn son died when a heavy avocado fell from a tree and struck his head while his mother was carrying him to his older brother’s nursery. The baby, named Lucas, was just 12 days old when the tragic incident occurred in the city of Quilmes, near Buenos Aires.

The incident happened at around 8 a.m. as Lucas’s mother, Giuliana, arrived at the nursery to drop off her five-year-old son. She was holding the newborn in her arms when an avocado fell from one of three trees lining the entrance and hit his head. The fruit reportedly weighed more than two pounds, delivering a devastating impact to the tiny infant.

Lucas suffered multiple skull fractures and urgently needed medical attention. Teachers and other mothers at the nursery tried to help Giuliana contact emergency services, but she later said that assistance did not arrive quickly enough. After an agonizing wait of around 30 minutes, Lucas’s father drove the baby and his mother to Sanatorio de la Trinidad hospital in Quilmes, where doctors were equipped to treat his severe injuries.

The newborn underwent emergency surgery before being admitted to intensive care. Despite the medical team’s efforts, Lucas died on Sunday, leaving his family heartbroken. His mother later expressed the unbearable pain of losing her child, saying that no parent could be expected to feel okay after such a devastating loss.

In the aftermath, Giuliana raised concerns about the safety of the trees outside the nursery. She claimed that the school had filed multiple complaints with local authorities over previous accidents and the potential danger posed by falling fruit, but no action had been taken. She also alleged that municipal workers arrived to prune the trees only two days after Lucas was struck.

Local authorities reportedly disputed the suggestion that the tree was unsafe, stating that it was in good condition and that the avocado had fallen naturally. The conflicting accounts have raised questions about whether the tragedy could have been prevented and whether earlier action might have reduced the risk to children and families using the entrance.

Police have opened an investigation into suspected negligent homicide. An autopsy is planned, and investigators are expected to examine Lucas’s medical records as they work to establish the full circumstances of his death. For his grieving family, the investigation may help answer questions surrounding a tragedy that unfolded during what should have been an ordinary morning.
