North Carolina Man Sentenced to Life Without Parole for Beating New Girlfriend to Death With Curtain Rod

Their relationship was still new, and they had only recently moved into a home together. But just days after starting their life under the same roof, 39-year-old Samantha Coppola was found dead. Now, the man responsible will spend the rest of his life behind bars.

Robert Edward Rathmann, 37, was convicted of first-degree murder on October 30, 2026, in connection with the death of his girlfriend, Samantha Coppola, in Pitt County, North Carolina. Following the jury’s verdict, Superior Court Judge Andrew Womble sentenced him to life in prison without the possibility of parole. The conviction came after a four-day trial in which jurors heard evidence about the final days of Coppola’s life and the violence that took place inside the couple’s mobile home.

The relationship between Rathmann and Coppola had reportedly begun only recently. According to accounts presented during earlier court proceedings, the couple had initially been staying with Rathmann’s aunt. However, they were asked to leave because of concerns about aggressive behavior. On October 10, 2022, they moved into a mobile home in Grimesland, a small community near Greenville. Just two days later, Coppola was believed to have been killed. Evidence presented at trial showed that Rathmann beat her to death with a curtain rod inside their home.

Concern grew when Coppola stopped communicating with friends and relatives. October 12 was reportedly the last morning anyone heard from her. Five days later, on October 17, her family requested a welfare check after becoming increasingly worried. When authorities entered the residence, they discovered her body. Investigators believed she had been dead for several days. The discovery launched a murder investigation that would eventually lead to Rathmann’s conviction.

Rathmann was already in police custody when Coppola’s body was discovered. On the night of October 13, 2022, he had been arrested in connection with a separate incident in Fayetteville. According to reports, he was driving Coppola’s vehicle when he allegedly threatened a man with a knife and demanded to see the man’s girlfriend. Investigators subsequently connected him to Coppola’s death. Although authorities classified the killing as an act of domestic violence, they did not publicly establish a specific motive for the murder.

During a 2023 bond hearing, Coppola’s family spoke about the devastating loss and urged the court not to release Rathmann. Her mother delivered an emotional statement, expressing the family’s pain and anger over what had happened to her daughter. Coppola’s obituary remembered her as a free spirit, a devoted mother and a woman with a good heart who was loved by those around her. Her death left her family facing a loss that no courtroom verdict could undo.

More than four years after the killing, the jury’s decision has finally brought the criminal case to a conclusion at trial. Rathmann will spend the rest of his life in prison, with no possibility of parole. For Coppola’s loved ones, the sentence represents legal accountability for a crime that abruptly ended her life shortly after she began a new chapter with someone she had recently fallen in love with.
