Official Investigation Launched After Man Is Killed in Tiger Attack at British Wildlife Park

A fatal encounter between a man and a tiger at Yorkshire Wildlife Park in Doncaster, England, has triggered an official investigation, raising questions about the circumstances surrounding the tragedy and the safety measures in place at the wildlife attraction.

The victim was identified as 24-year-old William Chapman. According to South Yorkshire Police, emergency services received reports at approximately 1:35 p.m. on October 10, 2026, that a man had entered a tiger enclosure. The animal attacked him, leaving him with severe injuries. Despite the efforts of emergency responders and medical personnel, Chapman was pronounced dead at the scene.

Investigators said Chapman had entered the enclosure after climbing over two fences. An initial post-mortem examination found that he died from multiple traumatic injuries sustained during the encounter. The circumstances leading him to enter the restricted area remain a central part of the investigation.

Following the incident, Yorkshire Wildlife Park was evacuated while police and other emergency personnel carried out their inquiries. The City of Doncaster Council, which is responsible for licensing the attraction, also launched a health and safety investigation. Authorities are examining the circumstances of the death, although no conclusions about potential failures or responsibility should be drawn before the investigations are completed.

The tiger involved, identified as Altai, an Amur tiger, was not injured and remained in its enclosure after the incident. The wildlife park later confirmed that the animal would not be euthanized as a result of the attack. After temporarily closing to visitors, the park reopened on October 16 and said it was continuing to cooperate with the relevant authorities.

An inquest into Chapman’s death was opened in October, with a full hearing scheduled for March 18, 2027. His death has left his family and loved ones grieving, while investigators continue working to establish the full circumstances of the incident.
