Oregon Elementary School Shooting Leaves Three Children and a Teacher Dead as 16-Year-Old Suspect Is Killed
A devastating shooting at an elementary school in Bend, Oregon, has left three young children and a teacher dead, while two other victims were hospitalized with critical injuries. The attack unfolded on Thursday afternoon, October 15, at Silver Rail Elementary School, transforming an ordinary school day into a scene of panic and heartbreak for students, staff members and families. Authorities said the suspected shooter, a 16-year-old boy, was also killed during the incident.

Police began receiving reports of gunfire shortly before 1 p.m. local time. According to Bend Police Chief Mike Krantz, the first emergency call came from a driver who reported being shot at multiple times by someone carrying a long gun. Within minutes, dispatchers began receiving additional 911 calls reporting that an armed suspect had entered the elementary school.
Investigators believe the teenager forced his way into the building by firing at locked doors. School officials were instructed to place the campus on lockdown at approximately 1:01 p.m. As emergency calls continued to come in, officers rushed to the scene. The first responding officers arrived around 1:02 p.m., and the suspect was reported to have been shot shortly afterward.
Authorities said the suspected shooter was a 16-year-old resident of Bend, but his identity had not been publicly released in the initial reports. Investigators had also not established whether he attended Silver Rail Elementary or had any known connection to the school or its students. Police were working to determine what led to the attack and how the teenager obtained access to the weapon.

The victims included three children, ages 5, 8 and 11, and one teacher. A 7-year-old child and a 54-year-old teacher also suffered critical injuries and were taken to the hospital, police said. The deaths of such young children sent shock waves through the community, leaving parents and residents struggling to comprehend how a place intended to provide safety and education could become the site of such violence.
Police said the suspect was fatally shot by a community member who reportedly saw the teenager entering the school, followed him inside and confronted him. Officials had not immediately released the bystander’s identity or all the circumstances surrounding the confrontation. Oregon Gov. Tina Kotek praised the individual for intervening, saying the action helped stop further loss of life. She also expressed sympathy for the victims, their loved ones and the wider community affected by the tragedy.
Following the shooting, officers evacuated the school room by room while emergency personnel worked at the scene. A nearby church was designated as a reunification location where families could reconnect with their children. The FBI joined the investigation, and agents from the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives were also expected to assist. All classes, school activities and athletic events across Bend-La Pine Schools were canceled for Friday as the district focused on supporting students and staff.

Superintendent Steven Cook described the incident as an unimaginable tragedy, saying the school community was heartbroken and horrified. As investigators continued gathering evidence and working to establish the suspect’s motive, the immediate priority remained supporting the injured and the families who had lost loved ones. For Bend, a community now facing the aftermath of a deadly attack on one of its elementary schools, the road ahead will involve grief, unanswered questions and efforts to help children and families feel safe again.
