São Vicente Schools Come Together to Remember 25 Lives Lost in Tragic Accident
Schools across São Vicente came together in a deeply moving tribute to honor the 25 people who lost their lives in a devastating road accident on the island of Fogo.
Held one month after the tragedy, the emotional ceremony brought together students, teachers and members of the community in a powerful display of solidarity. The central event took place at the Salesian School, with schools from São Vicente, as well as educational institutions from Santo Antão and São Nicolau, also taking part.
As part of the tribute, balloons were released in memory of the victims, symbolizing remembrance, compassion and support for the grieving families. Organizers said the gathering was intended to keep the victims’ memories alive while reminding people across the islands of the importance of standing together during difficult times.
The accident, which occurred on September 5 on Fogo Island, was one of the deadliest road tragedies recorded in Cape Verde. Twenty-five people lost their lives and 13 others were injured, leaving families and communities mourning across the country.
For those gathered in São Vicente, the tribute was more than a ceremony. It was a heartfelt message that the lives lost would not be forgotten—and that, even in the aftermath of profound grief, communities can come together with compassion and hope.
