Six Children Found Alone in a Home Police Described as “Unlivable” — What Officers Discovered Inside Was Even More Disturbing
A routine patrol in Tallahassee, Florida, took a disturbing turn when officers spotted a young child wandering dangerously close to traffic in the early hours of Sunday morning. The child narrowly avoided being struck by a vehicle, prompting officers to step in and help.

But when police escorted the child back to the family’s residence, they allegedly discovered five more children inside a home filled with waste, spoiled food and unsanitary conditions. None of the children appeared to have adequate adult supervision.
The discovery led to the arrest of 30-year-old Jamie Jakes, who is now facing six counts of child neglect, according to police and court documents.
A Child Nearly Struck by a Passing Vehicle
According to the Tallahassee Police Department, officers were patrolling the area of Lake Bradford Road at approximately 3:10 a.m. on Sunday, October 4, when they noticed a black vehicle swerve sharply to avoid hitting a child.
Officers approached the child and began investigating where the child lived.
When they arrived at the residence, they allegedly found three children without an adult present. One was wearing only a pair of jeans, while the other two were wearing soiled diapers.
Officers then discovered three additional children inside the home, reportedly lying together on a bed without adequate clothing.
The children appeared to have been left without supervision, and police began examining the conditions inside the residence.
What they reportedly found raised even greater concerns.
Inside a Home Police Called “Unlivable”
According to the arrest report, officers described the residence as “unlivable.”
Investigators reported finding feces and urine on the floors, dirty diapers in several rooms, spoiled food and mattresses that were wet and smelled of mildew.
Officers also attempted to find clean clothing for the children but reportedly found only shoes and pieces of clothing because much of the available clothing was wet and smelled of mildew.
The condition of the kitchen raised additional concerns. According to reports, the refrigerator contained no edible food, while spoiled food was scattered across the floor.
The children reportedly told officers they were hungry and could not say when they had last eaten.
These details prompted further questions about how long the children had been living under those conditions and whether their basic needs had been consistently met.
The Mother Returns — and Police Make an Arrest
Authorities said Jakes had left the residence before officers arrived. She reportedly returned at approximately 6 a.m., when police took her into custody.
During questioning, Jakes allegedly told officers that she paid someone $150 per week to supervise the children four times a week.
However, the individual she identified reportedly denied receiving payment or being responsible for the children. According to court documents, the person said he helped when he could but was not employed to provide childcare.
Jakes also reportedly claimed that the home had been clean the previous day. Investigators questioned that explanation, stating that the conditions they observed appeared inconsistent with her account.
The allegations remain part of the ongoing criminal case, and the full circumstances are still being investigated.
Six Counts of Child Neglect
Jakes was arrested on six counts of child neglect without great bodily harm, according to court records.
She reportedly made her first court appearance on October 5 and was granted pretrial release subject to conditions, including avoiding alcohol, refraining from further criminal activity and having no contact with the children.
The Florida Department of Children and Families is also investigating the circumstances surrounding the children’s living conditions.
Authorities have not publicly provided a complete timeline explaining how long the children may have been left unsupervised or how frequently they were exposed to the conditions described in the arrest report.
The criminal charges are allegations, and Jakes is presumed innocent unless proven guilty in court.
Six Young Lives at the Center of a Serious Investigation
The case has raised urgent questions about the children’s welfare and how the situation remained undiscovered until a child was spotted near a busy road.
For the responding officers, the initial concern was preventing a child from being struck by a vehicle. Their decision to locate the child’s home led to the discovery of five other children who also appeared to need immediate attention.
Authorities are now investigating the circumstances surrounding the alleged neglect, while child welfare officials work to address the children’s safety.
The most important questions remain unanswered: How long had the children been living in these conditions? Who, if anyone, was responsible for supervising them? And what steps will be taken to ensure their safety moving forward?
For now, the investigation continues, with six children at the center of a case that began with one frightening moment on a Florida road.
