According to the Hillsborough County Sheriff’s Office, emergency dispatchers began receiving reports of gunfire at approximately 12:11 p.m. at the Sabal Center, also known as Citibank Center, in Brandon. Investigators said the suspect drove a car through a secured perimeter and crashed into an outdoor seating area where people were having lunch. He then got out of the vehicle carrying a rifle and shot a woman. She was pronounced dead at the scene.
The violence continued inside the office complex, where an armed Citibank security guard confronted the gunman in the cafeteria. An exchange of gunfire followed, and the security guard shot the suspect, who was taken to Tampa General Hospital. He was pronounced dead shortly after 1 p.m. Authorities credited the security team with stopping the attacker before he could hurt more people. The security guard was among those injured and was taken for medical treatment.
Four additional people were treated at a local hospital for injuries that were not considered life-threatening. Officials have not clarified whether those injuries resulted from gunfire, the vehicle crash, or the chaos during the attack. More than 3,200 people were reportedly on the campus when the shooting happened, prompting a massive emergency response and an urgent effort to evacuate and secure the buildings.
The scale of the response was significant: 367 sheriff’s deputies, along with SWAT, aviation, drone and K-9 teams, were sent to the scene. Officers searched the buildings and helped employees leave safely. Authorities said the campus was cleared and secured, with no continuing threat to the public. Citigroup confirmed that it was cooperating with law enforcement as the company dealt with the aftermath of the tragedy.
Despite describing the shooting as targeted, investigators had not publicly identified the gunman or the woman who was killed, nor had they explained whether the two knew each other. A motive also remained unknown. The sheriff’s office is continuing its homicide investigation and has asked anyone with relevant video footage to share it with authorities. For the hundreds of employees who fled the campus and the families waiting for news, the attack has left painful questions that investigators are still trying to answer.
