Ted Bundy Had a Daughter While on Death Row — What Happened to Rosa After Her Father’s Execution?

She was born into one of America’s most notorious criminal stories, but unlike her father, Rosa Bundy has spent nearly her entire life away from the spotlight. After Ted Bundy confessed to his crimes, her mother cut off all contact, leaving the little girl without a final goodbye to her father.

Ted Bundy is remembered as one of the most notorious serial killers in American history. He confessed to murdering at least 30 women and girls across several states during the 1970s. His crimes shocked the country, and his name has remained synonymous with some of the darkest chapters in modern criminal history. Yet behind the headlines was a lesser-known part of his life: while awaiting execution in prison, Bundy became a father. His daughter, Rosa, was born on October 24, 1982, to his wife, Carole Ann Boone.

The circumstances surrounding Rosa’s birth were unusual. Boone had met Bundy in 1974 while they were working at Washington State’s Department of Emergency Services. Even after his arrest and mounting accusations, she continued to believe in his innocence and stood by him during his trials. In February 1980, during the penalty phase of his Florida murder trial, Bundy proposed to Boone while she was testifying as a character witness. Their exchange in court, witnessed by a judge and a notary, legally established their marriage. Two years later, Boone gave birth to their daughter while Bundy remained behind bars.

Although Bundy was imprisoned, Rosa reportedly had some contact with her father during her early childhood. Boone brought her to visit him, and a documentary later showed a handwritten note and drawing attributed to the little girl. The note contained a simple message: “I love you Daddy.” For a child, he was still someone she knew as her father, even as the outside world knew him for horrific crimes. Details of Rosa’s childhood were largely kept private, and reports described Boone as raising her under difficult financial circumstances.

The relationship between Bundy and Boone eventually collapsed. For years, Boone had defended him, but everything changed when he began admitting the truth about his murders shortly before his execution. According to Diane Smith, a friend of Boone’s who appeared in the documentary Ted Bundy: Falling for a Killer, Bundy’s final conversations with Boone revealed enough for her to understand that he had indeed killed the women and girls he had been accused of murdering. Smith recalled that Boone was devastated and angry. She ended contact with Bundy and refused to allow him to speak with Rosa again.

That decision meant Rosa never got to say goodbye to her father. Bundy was executed in Florida on January 24, 1989, at the age of 42. By then, he and Boone had already separated and divorced in 1986. After the relationship ended, Boone and Rosa reportedly moved away, seeking a life far removed from the attention surrounding Bundy’s crimes. Boone later died in a Seattle retirement home in 2018, according to accounts cited by PEOPLE.

So where is Rosa today? That remains largely unknown. She has not become a public figure, given widely verified interviews or spoken publicly about her father. There have been claims that she changed her name to protect her identity, but those reports have not been confirmed. True-crime author Ann Rule, who had known Bundy and later wrote about him, deliberately avoided finding out where Boone and Rosa lived. Rule believed they deserved privacy and said she had heard that Bundy’s daughter had grown into a fine young woman.

Rosa’s story is a reminder that the consequences of notorious crimes can extend far beyond the victims and the person responsible. She did not choose the family into which she was born, nor did she have any responsibility for her father’s actions. While the public continues to revisit Bundy’s crimes through documentaries, books and television productions, his daughter has remained outside that world. Perhaps the most important unanswered question is not where she is today, but whether she has been able to build the quiet, private life her mother and those who knew her hoped she could have.
