Teen Girl Dies Trying to Save Friend From Raging Floodwaters as Horrifying Footage Captures Final Moments

A teenage girl desperately tried to save her friend from a powerful flood current before both were swept away and killed in a heartbreaking tragedy in Brazil. The terrifying incident was captured on video, showing the moment one girl lost her footing and her friend reached out in a final attempt to pull her to safety.

The victims were identified as Laura Raianny Pereira da Silva, 16, and Rhaynny Rodrigues da Silva Barbosa, 19. The tragedy occurred in the early hours of Sunday in Jundiaí, approximately 37 miles northwest of São Paulo, after days of heavy rain caused severe flooding across the region.

Footage of the incident shows the girls caught in a fast-moving stream of muddy water. When Rhaynny lost her footing, Laura grabbed her arm with both hands and tried to keep her from being carried away. But the current was too powerful. As Laura stepped further into the rushing water to help her friend, she also lost her balance, and both girls were dragged downstream as bystanders watched in horror.

Emergency responders later recovered Rhaynny near the entrance to a club. She was rushed to São Vicente de Paulo Hospital, where she died at approximately 6:20 a.m. Laura was swept at least 1.2 miles downstream before firefighters found her body among rocks at around 9:40 a.m.

The two young women had reportedly been returning from a university party when they encountered the dangerous floodwaters. Jundiaí recorded approximately 79 millimeters of rainfall amid several days of severe weather. The flooding caused widespread disruption, damaging a bridge, eroding the banks of the Jundiaí River and forcing train services between São Paulo and Jundiaí to stop for more than four hours.

Following the tragedy, tributes poured in for both victims. A young supporters’ group associated with Santos FC remembered Laura for her joy, her love of the soccer club and the special bond she shared with her father. Rhaynny’s girlfriend also shared an emotional farewell, describing her as a loving person who consistently put the people she cared about first.

Organizers of the Paredão Universitário event expressed deep sadness over the deaths and said they were in contact with the victims’ families to offer support. The heartbreaking incident has highlighted the extreme dangers posed by fast-moving floodwaters, which can sweep people away in seconds even when they are attempting to help someone else.
