Teen Girl Was Killed by Her Ex-Boyfriend Just Two Days Before Her 18th Birthday — A Mother’s Heartbreaking Warning

For Heather Ferraro, the phone call that changed her life forever came after her 17-year-old daughter, Serenity Hawley, failed to show up for her shift at a pizza restaurant. At first, the family feared something might have gone wrong. But Heather never imagined that her daughter had been killed by the very boy she once dated — in a tragedy that unfolded just two days before Serenity’s 18th birthday.

Serenity, from Virginia, was a bright student with dreams of becoming a veterinarian. She had started dating Croney Monk during her final year of high school in 2023. Like many parents, Heather initially believed the relationship was simply a teenage romance that would eventually run its course. She expected her daughter to move on to university and begin a new chapter of her life.

But behind the scenes, the relationship had taken a troubling turn. In October 2023, school officials contacted Heather after Serenity had ended things with Monk. According to the family’s account, he had threatened to share a topless video of Serenity that he had allegedly recorded without her knowledge while she was changing. The threat left her mother horrified, and school staff suggested putting a no-contact order in place on campus. They also raised the possibility of contacting police.

Heather decided to try the school’s no-contact arrangement first, believing the situation might settle down. She later admitted that she had underestimated the danger and thought the boy would eventually move on. Serenity herself did not want to discuss the matter further, and the relationship between mother and daughter had become strained during her teenage years. Wanting to respect her daughter’s privacy, Heather did not push as hard as she now wishes she had.

Then, on November 7, 2023, the family’s worst fears became reality. Serenity’s stepmother contacted Heather after the teenager failed to arrive for her 4 p.m. shift. A family location app showed that her phone was near a shopping centre car park close to the restaurant. Worried that her daughter might have agreed to meet her former boyfriend, Heather prepared to go and look for her. Before she could reach the location, police contacted her with devastating news: Serenity had been found dead inside a van.

According to the account reported by The Sun, Monk had shot Serenity in the vehicle before taking his own life. Heather later learned that her daughter had agreed to meet him after he reportedly told her he intended to kill himself. Her mother believes Serenity, who was known for caring deeply about others, may have wanted to prevent him from harming himself. Instead, the meeting ended in an irreversible tragedy.

In the weeks that followed, Heather began searching for answers — and uncovered information that made the loss even harder to comprehend. Five other families reportedly came forward, each describing experiences in which Monk had stalked, harassed or abused their daughters. Friends also told Heather that he had followed Serenity around school after the breakup, insulted her and behaved in ways that had alarmed people around them. Heather also learned of previous concerns about his behavior, including a reported assault at school.

Looking back, Heather has been left haunted by the warning signs she did not fully understand at the time. She has spoken openly about how difficult it can be for parents to know when to respect a teenager’s independence and when to intervene. Her relationship with Serenity had been complicated, and she had worried that asking too many questions might push her daughter further away. Now, she urges other parents not to let fear of upsetting their teenagers stop them from asking about troubling relationships, threats or sudden changes in behavior.

Heather’s message is not simply about heartbreak — it is a plea for families to take controlling, threatening and harassing behavior seriously, even when it appears to be part of a teenage breakup. Serenity should have had the chance to celebrate her 18th birthday, pursue her ambitions and build the future she had dreamed of. Instead, her mother is left sharing her story in the hope that another family might recognize the warning signs in time.
