TENNESSEE PRISON ESCAPEE VANISHES AFTER STOLEN TRUCK IS FOUND ABANDONED IN ILLINOIS

A statewide manhunt has expanded beyond Tennessee after a 28-year-old inmate serving a life sentence escaped from prison, allegedly stole a pickup truck and disappeared before authorities could locate him. The stolen vehicle has now been discovered abandoned in southern Illinois, but investigators say the man himself remains missing.

Jacob Allen Morley escaped from the Northwest Correctional Complex in Tiptonville, Tennessee, on October 25, 2026. Security footage reviewed by authorities showed him breaching the prison’s perimeter fence and leaving the facility while still wearing his prison uniform.

The discovery of the abandoned truck has raised new questions about where Morley went after leaving Tennessee and whether anyone helped him during his escape. As of the latest reports on October 28, authorities had not publicly confirmed his whereabouts or announced his capture.

Investigators are urging residents to remain alert and report any information that could help them find him. Officials have also warned the public not to approach Morley because he is considered dangerous.

HOW THE ESCAPE WAS DISCOVERED
According to the Tennessee Department of Correction, prison staff discovered that Morley was unaccounted for at approximately 11:30 p.m. on Sunday, October 25.

Staff initiated an emergency inmate count and searched the facility. Security camera footage subsequently showed that Morley had breached the perimeter fence and exited the complex.

Authorities have not publicly explained exactly how he managed to get through the fence. They have also not disclosed whether the escape involved a weakness in the facility’s security system or whether anyone assisted him.

The Northwest Correctional Complex is located near Tiptonville in Lake County, in the far northwestern corner of Tennessee. The area is largely rural, with farmland and relatively isolated roads, making the search challenging once Morley was believed to have left the immediate prison area.

The Tennessee Department of Correction quickly began working with local, state and federal law enforcement agencies to locate him.

The escape also prompted investigators to review surveillance footage and examine possible movements in the area surrounding the prison. That work led authorities to a nearby property where Morley was allegedly captured on camera taking a pickup truck.

SURVEILLANCE VIDEO SHOWS A PICKUP TRUCK BEING TAKEN
The Tennessee Bureau of Investigation released surveillance footage that authorities say shows Morley taking a white 2008 Ford F-350 at approximately 1 a.m. on Monday, October 26.

The vehicle was reportedly taken from the 400 block of Keystone Drive in Lake County, roughly two miles from the prison.

Investigators identified the truck by several distinctive details. It was white, carried Tennessee license plate 138BBQV and had the words “Lindamood Planting Company” displayed on its side. An air compressor was also visible in the truck bed.

The surveillance footage became a significant part of the investigation because it provided authorities with a potential route to follow after Morley left the prison.

A camera operated by the Hornbeak Fire Department reportedly captured the vehicle passing the station at approximately 1:18 a.m. Monday. That sighting suggested the truck had travelled away from the immediate prison area shortly after it was allegedly taken.

Authorities appealed to residents to check doorbell cameras, home security systems, trail cameras and other surveillance equipment for footage that might reveal the vehicle’s route or show Morley travelling through the region.

Investigators were particularly interested in footage recorded during the early hours of October 26, when the truck was believed to have been moving through northwestern Tennessee.

THE STOLEN TRUCK WAS FOUND IN ILLINOIS
The search took a significant turn on Tuesday, October 27, when authorities confirmed that the stolen Ford F-350 had been found abandoned behind a shopping centre in Marion, Illinois.

Marion is approximately 120 miles north of the prison in Tennessee and roughly 90 miles southeast of St. Louis, Missouri.

According to reporting by The Associated Press, surveillance footage suggested the truck had been parked behind the shopping centre at around 4 a.m. Tuesday. It was reported to local police later that morning.

The discovery established that the vehicle had travelled a considerable distance from the location where it was allegedly taken. However, finding the truck did not reveal where Morley had gone after abandoning it.

Authorities have not publicly established whether he continued travelling on foot, obtained another vehicle, received assistance from someone else or followed another route.

Investigators also have not announced whether forensic evidence recovered from the truck has produced any new information about his movements.

The abandoned vehicle has therefore become another potential source of evidence, but it has not yet led publicly to Morley’s location.

The fact that the truck was found in Illinois also broadened the geographical scope of the search. Authorities are examining information that could help establish whether Morley remains in the area or has travelled farther away.

WHO IS JACOB ALLEN MORLEY?
Morley is 28 years old and was serving a life sentence at the time of his escape.

The Tennessee Bureau of Investigation describes him as approximately 5 feet 11 inches tall and weighing around 240 pounds. He has brown hair and green eyes.

Authorities have placed him on Tennessee’s Most Wanted list and warned the public not to approach him.

His criminal case dates back to February 2022, when Cody Birchfield was reported missing in eastern Tennessee. Birchfield had last been seen in the Elizabethton area, and investigators began examining the circumstances surrounding his disappearance.

Morley was arrested in March 2022 after a police pursuit that ended near the North Carolina state line. According to authorities and court records reported by multiple news organisations, Birchfield’s body was later discovered concealed beneath Morley’s home.

Morley was subsequently convicted in connection with Birchfield’s death. In addition to first-degree murder, he was convicted of aggravated burglary, tampering with evidence, vandalism and evading arrest.

He received a life sentence in 2025 and remained in state custody until the October 2026 escape.

His previous attempt to evade law enforcement in 2022 has added to authorities’ concerns about the current search. Officials are asking the public to leave any direct confrontation to trained law enforcement officers.

WHY AUTHORITIES ARE CONCERNED
The Tennessee Bureau of Investigation has described Morley as dangerous and urged anyone who sees him to avoid approaching or attempting to detain him.

The concern is heightened by the fact that he was serving a life sentence for a serious violent offence and is believed to have left prison without authorisation.

Investigators have not publicly confirmed whether he possesses a weapon or whether anyone is assisting him. Authorities have also not established whether he has access to another vehicle.

For those reasons, officials are urging the public not to make assumptions about his current location or try to investigate his whereabouts independently.

Anyone who believes they have seen Morley or has reliable information about his movements should contact law enforcement immediately.

The Tennessee Bureau of Investigation has offered a reward of up to $2,500 for information leading to his arrest.

Authorities have asked residents in areas near the prison, along the suspected route of the stolen truck and around Marion, Illinois, to review relevant surveillance footage and report anything that could assist the investigation.

A SECOND ESCAPE INCIDENT ADDS PRESSURE ON TENNESSEE AUTHORITIES
Morley’s escape comes amid wider scrutiny of security and staffing issues within Tennessee’s correctional system.

Earlier in October, another inmate, Gregory Redden, escaped while receiving treatment at Nashville General Hospital. Redden, 63, reportedly slipped out of his restraints and walked away from the hospital before authorities recaptured him several hours later.

Although the two incidents occurred under different circumstances, both drew attention to the challenges of maintaining custody when inmates are outside their usual secure environments or when security procedures are breached.

The Northwest Correctional Complex has also faced scrutiny over violence inside the facility and staffing shortages. Reports have described assaults involving inmates and employees, while a 2023 audit identified significant vacancies among correctional officer positions.

In September 2026, Tennessee also faced questions about its correctional operations following a failed execution procedure involving Christa Pike. The subsequent controversy contributed to the resignation of the state’s correction commissioner.

These issues form part of the broader context surrounding the latest escape, although authorities have not said that staffing shortages or other prison-system problems directly caused Morley to get out.

The immediate priority remains locating him and determining exactly how he escaped.

WHAT INVESTIGATORS STILL NEED TO DETERMINE
Several important questions remain unanswered.

First, investigators need to establish Morley’s movements after the truck was abandoned in Illinois. The vehicle’s location provides a potential lead, but it does not establish how far he may have travelled afterward.

Second, authorities must determine whether anyone helped him escape or assisted him after he left the prison. Officials have not publicly confirmed that another person was involved.

Third, investigators are working to establish how Morley breached the prison perimeter. Security footage reportedly captured him leaving through the fence, but authorities have not released a detailed explanation of how he managed to get through it.

The answers could help investigators understand whether the escape was planned in advance and whether any additional people or locations should be examined.

For now, authorities have not publicly confirmed a motive for the escape beyond the fact that Morley left custody. They have also not announced any new charges related specifically to the escape.

THE SEARCH CONTINUES
The discovery of the stolen pickup truck in Illinois has given investigators a clearer picture of at least part of Morley’s route, but the central objective remains unchanged: finding him and returning him to custody.

The search involves multiple law enforcement agencies, and officials are relying on surveillance footage, public tips and investigative work to narrow down his whereabouts.

The public has been asked to report information rather than approach him. Anyone with information can call 911 or contact the Tennessee Bureau of Investigation at 1-800-TBI-FIND. The Tennessee Department of Correction has also listed its fugitive tip line at 1-844-832-3463.

As of the latest reports available on October 28, 2026, Morley remained at large. Authorities had confirmed that the stolen truck was found in Illinois, but they had not publicly disclosed a confirmed sighting of Morley after the vehicle was abandoned.

Until investigators establish where he went next, the search remains active across state lines.
