Trapped on a Muddy Counter, a Frightened Porcupine Gets a Gentle Rescue

A small porcupine with long black-and-white quills and wet brown fur was found stranded inside a storm-damaged garden supply store, perched on a muddy wooden counter surrounded by broken plant pots, wet soil, and fallen flowers.

Bodycam footage shows the rescuer approaching slowly, wearing a tan firefighter rescue jacket with yellow reflective stripes and thick black protective gloves. Water drips from overturned plants nearby, and the porcupine stays still, watching nervously as the camera moves closer.

Instead of grabbing the animal, the rescuer gently places a thick rescue blanket on the counter beside it. The porcupine turns its head and raises its quills slightly, a natural defensive reaction, but the rescuer waits and moves with care.

Using the blanket as a protective barrier, the rescuer supports the porcupine from below without pressing on its quills and slowly lifts it from the muddy surface. Moments later, the animal is placed into a secure, ventilated wildlife transport container on a stable surface nearby, where it settles safely inside.

The rescue is a reminder that even small, spiky, and frightened animals deserve patience. With the right handling, a stressful situation can end quietly, safely, and with a second chance.
