Two Young Men Identified After Georgia Block Party Shooting Leaves 2 Dead and 35 Injured

What began as a massive homecoming celebration in a small Georgia town ended in chaos early Sunday morning when more than 50 shots rang out, leaving two young men dead and 35 others injured.

The victims have now been identified as Ja’Quavion Aderious Jackson, 21, of Cordele, and Macaleb Malik Jackson, 23, of Hawkinsville. Investigators said the two men do not appear to have been related.

The shooting happened around 1:25 a.m. on Oct. 4 along Pine Street in Vienna, Georgia, where more than 1,000 people had gathered for a neighborhood block party during homecoming weekend. Deputies from the Dooly County Sheriff’s Office were already patrolling the area when gunfire suddenly erupted.

Witnesses described a terrifying scene as people scattered in every direction. Authorities said gunfire was reported at at least two locations roughly a block apart, with more than 50 shots fired. Some people were injured by gunfire, while others were hurt during the frantic attempt to escape.

The 35 injured victims ranged in age from 14 to 51. Their conditions varied from stable to critical, and they were transported to several hospitals across the region. Officials have said that most of the injuries were caused by gunfire, although some people were hurt in the chaos as crowds tried to flee.

Dooly County Sheriff Craig Peavy said the scale of the gathering made the situation especially difficult for responding officers. Deputies were already nearby when the shooting began, but additional gunfire erupted as officers tried to determine where the shots were coming from.

The block party was connected to homecoming weekend, but school officials emphasized that it was not a school-sponsored event. Dooly County schools planned to open with additional safety measures following the violence.

Perhaps most troubling for investigators is that the motive remains unknown. As of the latest reports, no arrests had been announced, and authorities had not publicly identified a suspect or determined what sparked the gunfire. The Georgia Bureau of Investigation is assisting the Dooly County Sheriff’s Office with the investigation.

For the families of Ja’Quavion Jackson and Macaleb Jackson, the celebration has now become a painful memory. Two young lives were lost, dozens of others were injured, and a small Georgia community is left asking the same question investigators are trying to answer: How did a night meant for celebration turn into such devastating violence?
