Woman, 65, Killed in Shark Attack During Morning Swim Off South African Coast

A peaceful morning swim turned into a devastating tragedy when a 65-year-old woman was fatally attacked by a shark off South Africa’s southeastern coast. The incident shocked the local open-water swimming community, prompted the closure of two beaches, and left friends and loved ones mourning a woman whose life revolved around the ocean and music.

The victim, identified as Janine Lochrenberg, was swimming with a group of fellow open-water swimmers at Orient Beach in KuGompo, formerly known as East London, on the morning of Tuesday, October 20, 2026. According to reports, police were called to the beach at approximately 7 a.m. local time after the incident. Fellow swimmers heard her cries for help and quickly rushed toward her, only to discover that she had suffered severe bite injuries to her thigh and upper arm.

Members of the swimming group immediately worked together to bring Lochrenberg back to shore. Despite their desperate efforts, including attempts to revive her and assistance from a medically trained member of the group, she could not be saved. She was pronounced dead at the scene. One particularly troubling detail was that Lochrenberg and other members of the group were reportedly wearing magnetic shark-repellent devices while swimming. The circumstances surrounding the attack remain under investigation, and authorities have not publicly confirmed the species of shark involved.

In response to the tragedy, the Buffalo City Metropolitan Municipality closed both Orient Beach and nearby Eastern Beach as a precaution. Officials also issued warnings urging the public to stay out of the affected waters, remain alert at surrounding beaches, and follow instructions from local authorities. Police have opened an inquest to establish the circumstances surrounding Lochrenberg’s death. According to municipal records cited in local reporting, the city’s previous fatal shark attack occurred in 1997, making the latest incident particularly alarming for the coastal community.

Beyond the circumstances of her death, tributes have painted a picture of a woman who deeply cherished her life and passions. Lochrenberg was a recently retired nuclear radiographer and a longtime member of the Viva Musica Ensemble, where she played the viola. Her partner, Barbara Briceland, described her as intelligent, thoughtful, kind, and brave. The couple had reportedly been looking forward to retirement together and were preparing for a three-week road trip, plans that have now been tragically cut short.

Her fellow swimmers also remembered her as a valued member of their close-knit community who found happiness in the ocean. For them, the loss was not simply a shocking wildlife incident but the death of a friend who had shared countless mornings in the water with them. Members of the swimming group paid tribute to her love of the sea and the lasting place she would hold in their lives.

As investigators work to determine exactly what happened, the tragedy serves as a sobering reminder that even familiar coastal waters can carry unpredictable risks. Authorities continue to urge beachgoers to take safety warnings seriously and follow official guidance. For Lochrenberg’s family, partner, and friends, however, the focus remains on remembering a woman whose love of swimming and music shaped her life—and whose sudden death has left a profound void in the community she cherished.
