Woman Stops to Help Two Strangers With a Dead Car Battery — Then One Allegedly Pulls a Gun and Robs Her
A Philadelphia woman who stopped to help two strangers with what appeared to be a broken-down vehicle allegedly became the victim of an armed robbery just moments later. The woman had reportedly pulled over after the men asked for help jump-starting their car, but police say one of them pulled out a gun and stole her purse instead of accepting her assistance.

The incident happened at approximately 12:45 p.m. on Thursday, October 22, near the intersection of 11th and Courtland streets in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. According to the Philadelphia Police Department, the two men were standing beside a newer-model silver Jeep Compass with its hood raised. They reportedly flagged down the woman and explained that their vehicle needed a jump-start.
Believing they needed help, the woman got out of her own car and approached the pair. However, investigators say the situation quickly took a frightening turn when one of the men allegedly produced a firearm and demanded her belongings. He then reportedly grabbed her purse before both suspects fled south along 11th Street.
Police have since released surveillance footage in an effort to identify the two men. Investigators described the alleged armed robber as approximately 5 feet 8 inches tall, wearing a black jacket, black Adidas pants with a white stripe and a black face covering. The second suspect was described as approximately 5 feet 9 inches tall, with short dreadlocks, a black jacket and black pants.
The incident has raised concerns among residents about the risks of helping strangers in distress. One neighborhood resident told local media that the case made people question whether even a simple act of kindness could put them in danger. The woman’s experience illustrates how quickly an apparently ordinary roadside encounter can become threatening.
Authorities are urging anyone who recognizes the suspects or has information about the robbery to come forward. Police have warned members of the public not to approach the men if they believe they have seen them, but to call 911 instead. Tips can be provided to Philadelphia’s Northwest Detective Division at 215-686-3353 or anonymously through the department’s tip line at 215-686-TIPS (8477).
As investigators continue reviewing surveillance footage and pursuing leads, the suspects have not been publicly identified in the report. The allegations remain under investigation, and police are asking the community to help bring those responsible to account.
