19-Year-Old College Cheerleader Killed in Illinois Halloween Party Mass Shooting That Injured 8 Others
A 19-year-old college student with a bright future ahead of her was killed when gunfire erupted during a Halloween party near a university campus in Illinois. Giana Dettloff, a former high school cheerleader who had recently begun her college journey, was visiting one of her closest friends when the gathering suddenly turned into a scene of panic and tragedy. Eight other people, including teenagers and college students, were also wounded in the shooting.

The shooting happened at approximately 1:23 a.m. on Sunday, November 1, 2026, in the 100 block of East Division Street in Bloomington, Illinois, near Illinois Wesleyan University. Police said the gathering was taking place in a shared backyard behind rental properties, with approximately 150 to 200 people reportedly present. Officers were responding to another call nearby when they heard multiple gunshots. They quickly rushed to the scene and began helping the wounded. According to police, the party had appeared peaceful before the gunfire erupted, with no reported disturbances or warning signs.
Dettloff, who was from Carol Stream, Illinois, was pronounced dead at the scene. A preliminary autopsy determined that she died from multiple gunshot wounds to the chest and pelvic region. She was the only daughter of her parents and had recently started her freshman year at North Central College in Naperville, where she was a member of the college cheerleading team. She had also previously cheered for Glenbard North High School’s North Panthers program.
Her death has devastated her family, friends and former teammates. Police Chief Jamal Simington said her family remembered her as a young woman who was full of life, sweet and filled with promise. Her former cheerleading team also shared a tribute, describing her as a caring person who had made a lasting positive impact on the school community. Friends remembered her as someone who brought happiness into a room and made others feel welcome. Beyond cheerleading, she had volunteered with younger athletes and worked with her local park district.
The eight other victims ranged in age from 16 to 22. They included high school students and young adults attending Illinois Wesleyan University, Illinois State University and Quincy University. Several suffered gunshot wounds to their arms, legs, chest or abdomen. Some were initially reported to be in critical condition, but authorities later confirmed that several had improved to stable condition, while others were treated and released from the hospital. The victims came from different communities, and police said many did not know one another before the gathering.
As of November 3, investigators had not announced any arrests or identified a suspect publicly. Authorities are still working to determine whether one person or multiple individuals opened fire and what led to the shooting. Police are asking anyone who attended the party or has photographs, videos or other information from the surrounding area to come forward. For Giana’s loved ones, the investigation continues while they grieve a young woman whose college years and future were cut tragically short. Her school communities are remembering her not for the violence that took her life, but for the kindness, energy and encouragement she brought to the people around her.
