The attack took place at around 7 p.m. on Friday, October 16, at the St. Vitus-Stift care home in Olfen, a town in western Germany near Dortmund. According to police, a 72-year-old male resident allegedly attacked three women with a knife in the facility’s cafeteria. The 86-year-old woman died at the scene, while the other two victims, aged 81 and 83, suffered serious injuries.

The condition of the two survivors was initially reported as critical. The 81-year-old woman sustained serious injuries, while the 83-year-old was taken to hospital with injuries described as life-threatening. Emergency services rushed to the scene, with police, firefighters and medical teams responding to the incident. Two rescue helicopters were also deployed to help transport the injured women for urgent treatment.

After the attack, the suspect reportedly returned to his room. Officers later found him there and arrested him without resistance, according to reports. The man, whose identity has not been publicly released, reportedly uses a wheelchair and was also a resident at the care home. His arrest left investigators facing a difficult question: what could have led to such a violent incident between people living in the same facility?

Authorities have not publicly confirmed a motive. While some media reports have suggested that tensions between the suspect and other residents may have played a role, investigators have not established that explanation as fact. A homicide investigation team has been formed to examine the circumstances, determine what happened before the attack and gather evidence from the scene.

On October 17, the Münster District Court issued an arrest warrant for the suspect and ordered him to remain in custody ahead of his first court appearance. He faces one count of manslaughter and two counts of attempted manslaughter in conjunction with aggravated assault. These are charges, and the allegations will need to be addressed through the legal process.

The St. Vitus-Stift facility provides nursing care for around 77 elderly residents who need support because of health conditions. The site also includes an assisted-living complex with 36 apartments, as well as residential groups for older people, including those living with dementia. For residents and their families, the attack has raised painful concerns about safety in a place where many people depend on others for daily care and protection.

As investigators continue their work, the identities of the three women have not been released publicly. Their families are now facing a deeply distressing situation, while the two survivors continue to receive medical treatment. Police have not indicated that there is an ongoing threat from the suspect, who remains in custody.

The tragedy has left a care community grieving and searching for answers. For now, investigators are focused on establishing the sequence of events and determining what led to the attack. Until more information is confirmed, the motive remains unknown, and the case serves as a sobering reminder of how quickly a place associated with care and security can be struck by unexpected violence.
