Hamas Operative Accused of Taking Part in Shani Louk’s Abduction Is Killed in Israeli Airstrike — Final Member of the Cell Reportedly Eliminated

Three years after the October 7 attack that shocked the world, Israel says it has killed the last remaining member of the Hamas cell involved in the abduction of German-Israeli woman Shani Louk.

An Israeli airstrike in northern Gaza has reportedly killed a Hamas operative accused of participating in the abduction of Shani Louk during the October 7, 2023, attack on Israel. The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) and the Shin Bet security agency identified the man as Tamer Mohammad Ibrahim Al-Zabaq, a member of Hamas’s military wing. According to a joint statement released on October 20, 2026, he was killed in the Jabalia area of northern Gaza during a strike carried out the previous day. Israeli authorities said he had crossed into Israeli territory during the October 7 assault and was involved in taking Louk.

Louk, 22, was a German-Israeli tattoo artist who had attended the Nova music festival near the Gaza border when Hamas-led militants launched their assault. Images of her lying motionless in the back of a pickup truck, surrounded by armed men as the vehicle moved through Gaza, spread around the world and became among the most widely recognized images from that day. Her family endured months of uncertainty before Israeli authorities confirmed her death. In May 2024, Israeli forces recovered her remains from Gaza and returned them to her family for burial.

According to the Israeli military, Al-Zabaq had remained involved in militant activities after the October 7 attack. The IDF and Shin Bet alleged that he had advanced attacks against Israeli soldiers and civilians and worked to rebuild Hamas’s military capabilities during the war. They described his activities as violations of the ceasefire and said the strike was intended to eliminate the threat he posed. However, the military statement did not publicly provide detailed evidence supporting the allegations about his recent activities or explain the specific intelligence that led to the strike.

The reported killing also marks the end of a lengthy pursuit of the five-member cell identified by Israeli authorities as being involved in Louk’s abduction. According to the IDF and reporting by The Times of Israel, three members had been killed earlier in the war, while another had been captured by Israeli forces. Al-Zabaq was reportedly the final member of the group still at large. His death means that, according to Israeli authorities, all five members have now either been killed or taken into custody.

For Louk’s family, the news comes more than three years after the devastating attack that took her life. Her image became a symbol of the suffering experienced by victims and families during the October 7 assault, while the recovery of her remains in 2024 brought a painful end to the uncertainty surrounding her fate. The latest Israeli announcement closes another chapter in the pursuit of those accused of taking part in her abduction. However, the broader consequences of the October 7 attack and the continuing conflict in Gaza remain far from resolved.
