Three Children Die After Mother’s SUV Overturns During Passing Attempt — She Now Faces Multiple Murder Charges
A Missouri mother is facing a series of serious criminal charges after a devastating highway crash claimed the lives of three of her children. Investigators say the tragedy unfolded when she allegedly attempted to pass a pickup truck, struck the vehicle and lost control of her SUV, which then left the roadway and overturned several times.

According to authorities, the crash happened around 9 p.m. on September 25, 2026, along U.S. Highway 61 near Matthews, Missouri. Kaia Walls, 33, was driving an SUV carrying several passengers when she reportedly tried to overtake a pickup truck traveling ahead of her. The Missouri State Highway Patrol said her vehicle struck the rear of the truck before veering off the road and rolling over multiple times.
The consequences were devastating. Three of Walls’ children — a 9-year-old girl, a 10-year-old boy and a 13-year-old boy — died in the crash. Their names have not been publicly released. A 15-year-old boy and a 62-year-old woman who were also inside the SUV suffered injuries, while Walls herself was treated for injuries sustained in the wreck. The driver of the pickup truck was reportedly unharmed. Investigators also noted a troubling detail: the 62-year-old woman was the only person in either vehicle wearing a seat belt, according to authorities.
As investigators worked to establish what led to the crash, they allegedly determined that Walls had been intoxicated while driving. After receiving medical treatment, she reportedly left Missouri and traveled to Texas. Authorities later traced her to Killeen, approximately 700 miles from the crash site, where she was staying with her father. The U.S. Marshals Service became involved in the search and arrested her on October 22.
Walls now faces three counts of second-degree murder, first-degree assault, 13 counts of armed criminal action, three counts of driving while intoxicated causing death, two counts of DWI causing serious physical injury and four counts of endangering the welfare of a child. She was booked into the Bell County Jail in Belton, Texas, and was expected to be extradited to Missouri to face the charges.
The case leaves behind the deaths of three young children and serious questions about the decisions that preceded the crash. However, the criminal proceedings will determine the evidence and legal responsibility surrounding what happened that night. Walls has been charged, but the allegations have not yet been proven in court.
