Iowa Mother Charged After Allegedly Hiding Barely Breathing Newborn on Closet Shelf Instead of Calling for Help

An Iowa mother is facing criminal charges after authorities say she gave birth to a premature baby boy, wrapped him in a towel and placed him inside a bag on a closet shelf rather than seeking emergency medical assistance. The infant was later found dead inside her home, and investigators are now examining the circumstances surrounding his birth and final hours. Margaret Conant, 39, was arrested in November 2026 and charged with child endangerment creating a substantial risk of bodily injury and a prohibited act involving a prescription drug violation.

The case began on December 31, 2025, when officers with the Marion Police Department responded to Conant’s residence after receiving a report of an unconscious and unresponsive newborn. When officers arrived, they discovered the baby boy, identified in court documents only as C.C., deceased. During the investigation, police learned that Conant had reportedly given birth approximately two days earlier. According to the criminal complaint, she told investigators that the infant was barely breathing and had made sounds for only about a minute after being born.

Authorities allege that instead of contacting emergency services or taking the newborn to a hospital, Conant wrapped him in a towel, placed him inside a bag and moved the bag onto a shelf in a closet. She reportedly told investigators that the baby stopped making sounds after she placed him there. The discovery has raised serious questions about why medical assistance was not sought and what might have happened if the infant had received immediate treatment.

An autopsy determined that the baby had been born at approximately 25 to 26 weeks of gestation, meaning he was extremely premature and would have required urgent medical attention. Investigators also uncovered information indicating that Conant had ordered abortion medications, including mifepristone and misoprostol, from an online service on December 21, 2025 — just 10 days before the baby was discovered. Authorities allege that she provided inaccurate information about the date of her last menstrual period to obtain the medication.

Linn County Prosecutor Nick Maybanks said the investigation was complicated and took nearly a year before prosecutors decided to file charges. Investigators reviewed multiple pieces of evidence, including information recovered from Conant’s cellphone. However, prosecutors have acknowledged that it remains unclear whether immediate medical intervention could have saved the infant’s life. That uncertainty is significant because the baby’s extreme prematurity raises medical questions that investigators and prosecutors must address as the case proceeds.

Conant is being held at the Linn County Correctional Center on a $5,000 bond. The charges against her are allegations, and she has not been convicted. As the legal process moves forward, authorities will need to establish the circumstances of the birth, the infant’s medical condition and whether the alleged conduct meets the requirements of the criminal charges. For now, the case remains a deeply troubling investigation into the death of a premature newborn whose final moments may never be fully known.
