Israeli Strike Kills Final Hamas Cell Member Linked to Shani Louk’s Abduction on October 7

More than three years after the October 7, 2023, Hamas attack that shocked Israel and the world, an Israeli airstrike has killed the final member of a Hamas cell identified by Israeli authorities as being involved in the abduction of Shani Louk. The Israeli military and Shin Bet security agency announced on October 20, 2026, that Tamer Mohammad Ibrahim Al-Zabaq was killed in an airstrike in Jabalia, in the northern Gaza Strip. According to the joint statement, Al-Zabaq had crossed into Israeli territory during the October 7 assault and participated in the abduction of Louk, a 22-year-old German-Israeli woman who had been attending the Nova music festival.

Shani Louk: German missing since Hamas terror attacks dead

Louk became one of the most recognizable victims of the October 7 attack after photographs and videos emerged showing her apparently lifeless body being transported through Gaza in the back of a pickup truck. The disturbing images spread internationally and brought widespread attention to the violence at the music festival. Her family initially held on to hope that she might still be alive, but Israeli authorities confirmed her death on October 30, 2023, after DNA testing identified a fragment of her skull. Her remains were later recovered by Israeli forces in Gaza in May 2024 and returned to her family.

The Israeli military said Al-Zabaq had not simply participated in the original attack. According to the IDF and Shin Bet, he continued operating during the war and had recently been involved in advancing attacks against Israeli soldiers and civilians while helping restore Hamas’s military capabilities. Israeli officials also accused him of violating the ceasefire through these activities. The military said the strike was intended to eliminate the threat he posed. These claims were made by Israeli security authorities, and independent verification of his alleged recent activities was not provided in the reports.

His death was particularly significant because Israeli officials described him as the last member of the five-person cell associated with Louk’s abduction who had not previously been killed or captured. Three other members had reportedly been killed earlier in the war, while another was taken into Israeli custody. With Al-Zabaq’s death, the military said all five members of the group had been accounted for. The Times of Israel also reported that the man was the final member of the cell seen in the widely circulated footage of Louk being taken into Gaza.

The operation came amid continued Israeli efforts to target Hamas operatives in Gaza despite the ceasefire. In a separate strike, the IDF and Shin Bet also announced the killing of Akram Bassam Shaaban Yassin, described as a senior official in Hamas’s General Security Mechanism. Israeli officials alleged that he had been involved in planning attacks and restoring the group’s capabilities. The two operations underscored Israel’s position that it would continue targeting individuals it considers security threats, even during the ceasefire period.

For Shani Louk’s family, the announcement marks another development in a tragedy that began when their daughter went to a music festival and never returned home. Her image became a symbol of the brutality of the October 7 assault, while the long effort to recover her remains brought further attention to the suffering of families whose loved ones were taken into Gaza. The death of the final identified member of the cell does not undo what happened to Louk, but it closes another chapter in the Israeli military’s pursuit of those it says were directly involved in her abduction.
