School Bus Crash in France Kills 7-Year-Old Girl and 18-Year-Old Boy as 20 Others Are Injured

A morning journey that should have taken students safely to school ended in tragedy when a bus carrying dozens of passengers crashed into a tree in eastern France, killing two people and injuring 20 others. The devastating accident happened around 7 a.m. on November 6, 2026, near the small town of Lent, in the Ain region northeast of Lyon. Among those who lost their lives were a 7-year-old girl and an 18-year-old boy, turning an ordinary school-day morning into a nightmare for families and the local community.

The bus was traveling between Dompierre and Bourg-en-Bresse and was carrying approximately 49 people, including 15 school-aged children, according to reports. For reasons investigators have not yet established, the vehicle reportedly veered across the road, plunged into a roadside ditch, and slammed into a tree. The impact was so severe that part of the bus’s side was torn away. Lent Mayor Yves Cristin described the destruction as spectacular and said he arrived at the scene just minutes after the crash, where he found passengers in shock.

Emergency crews rushed to help the victims, deploying more than 100 firefighters, police officers, medical personnel, and rescue helicopters. Twenty passengers were reported injured, including four in critical condition, according to figures cited by The Sun. The bus driver was among those taken to hospital after being freed from the wreckage. Authorities have not yet been able to question the driver because of his medical condition. A nearby community hall was opened to provide shelter and assistance to those affected by the disaster.

The tragedy prompted an emotional response from French officials. Education Minister Édouard Geffray expressed his sympathy for the students and their families, saying it was especially painful when children became victims of such accidents. Transport Minister Philippe Tabarot also traveled to the area to assess the situation. Prime Minister Sébastien Lecornu offered condolences to the families who lost loved ones and praised the emergency responders working at the scene.

Investigators have opened a criminal inquiry into the circumstances of the crash, including possible road homicide and aggravated road injuries. The cause remains unknown. Mayor Cristin said the road was slightly damp but that there were no major difficulties along that stretch. He questioned why the bus had crossed the road and ended up in the opposite ditch. Authorities are now working to reconstruct the moments before impact and determine what caused the driver to lose control.

Behind the investigation are families facing the sudden loss of loved ones, including a young child whose life had barely begun and an 18-year-old whose future was just opening up. Other passengers, including schoolchildren, are recovering from injuries and the shock of witnessing the collision. What began as a routine journey has left an entire community grieving, while parents and relatives wait for answers about how such a devastating accident could happen.
