Six-Year-Old Boy Dies Weeks After Suspected Arson Attack Killed His Parents and Two Brothers in Ireland

A devastating family tragedy in Waterford, Ireland, has claimed another young life after a six-year-old boy died in hospital from injuries sustained in a suspected arson attack on his family home. Elliot English passed away on Friday, November 6, more than three weeks after the fire that killed his parents and two older brothers. His death brings the number of victims from the October 13 attack to five, leaving the family and their community facing an unimaginable loss.

The fire broke out shortly after 5 a.m. at the English family home in the Birchwood estate, Waterford. Emergency crews rushed to the scene after reports of a serious house fire and found the two-story property engulfed in flames. Elliot’s parents, Kim and Philip English, and his brothers, Callum, 12, and Jayden, nine, died as a result of the blaze. Elliot and his 14-year-old sister were also critically injured and taken to hospital. Despite weeks of treatment, Elliot died at Children’s Health Ireland at Crumlin in Dublin, with family members reportedly by his side. His older sister remains in hospital receiving treatment.

Investigators believe the fire was deliberately started as part of an arson attack. Reports indicate that an incendiary device, believed to have been a petrol bomb, was thrown at the family home. The attack is being investigated as a multiple murder. Authorities have reportedly been examining whether the family was targeted because of pressure connected to a drug debt and intimidation involving a criminal gang. The family had allegedly experienced previous attacks, including an earlier petrol-bomb incident and damage to their car. However, investigators have not publicly established the full motive or identified everyone responsible.

Six people have been arrested in connection with the investigation so far. Four were subsequently released without charge, with files expected to be sent to Ireland’s Director of Public Prosecutions. Two others, Jessica Dalton, 31, and Cian Stacey, 21, have appeared before Waterford District Court. They face charges including criminal damage and assault causing serious harm. Both have been remanded in custody and are due to appear again on November 17. These charges do not establish that either defendant started the fire or caused the deaths, and the investigation remains ongoing.

The deaths have left the Waterford community in mourning. At the funeral for Kim, Philip, Callum and Jayden, relatives and members of the community remembered the family as loving people who were deeply devoted to one another. Tributes have also highlighted the boys’ lives and the support their parents gave them. Following Elliot’s death, the family expressed profound sadness and thanked those who had offered support, while asking the public and media to respect their privacy during this painful time.

With five members of the English family now dead and one child still receiving hospital care, the investigation continues to seek answers about the attack. Police are appealing for anyone with relevant information to come forward. For the surviving relatives, the focus remains on grieving those they have lost and hoping for the recovery of the child who remains in hospital.
