Meghan Markle’s Father Thomas Markle Appears in Federal Court After FBI Arrest — Released While Facing 20 Years in Prison
Thomas Markle, the estranged father of Meghan, Duchess of Sussex, has appeared in a federal courtroom in Florida following his arrest over allegations involving child sexual abuse material. The 82-year-old was taken into custody by FBI agents on November 6, 2026, at an assisted-living facility in Lakeland. His court appearance marked a major development in an investigation that has attracted international attention and involved authorities in the United States, the Philippines and Mexico.

Markle appeared before a federal magistrate judge in Tampa, Florida, in a wheelchair. He was formally informed of the charge against him but did not enter a plea. According to PEOPLE, the court clerk confirmed that he was released and allowed to return to the assisted-living facility where he had been staying. His release came with restrictions, including electronic monitoring and home detention. Although he is no longer in custody, he remains under federal supervision while the case proceeds.
The criminal complaint alleges that Markle possessed sexually explicit images involving prepubescent girls, including photographs allegedly showing himself with minors. Federal investigators searched two storage units in the Los Angeles area that Markle had reportedly rented since 2008. Authorities seized approximately 78 items, including photographic slides, film negatives and books containing suspected child sexual abuse material. Prosecutors say the evidence included images that a witness identified as depicting Markle with a young girl.
The investigation reportedly gained momentum after Markle’s son, Thomas Markle Jr., raised concerns about material he allegedly discovered among his father’s belongings in the Philippines. Information provided to authorities led investigators to the California storage units, where search warrants were obtained. Law enforcement agencies in the Philippines and Mexico have also conducted separate inquiries involving properties and belongings linked to the 82-year-old. These international investigations have added further complexity to the case.
The allegations have also placed Meghan Markle’s family history back in the spotlight. Meghan previously said she was deeply distressed by the claims and that her thoughts were with any children who may have been harmed. She also explained that her decision to remain estranged from her father and keep him away from her children was made to protect them. A representative for the Duchess did not immediately comment following her father’s arrest.
If convicted of the federal possession charge, Thomas Markle could face a maximum sentence of 20 years in prison. However, he has not entered a plea, and the allegations have not yet been tested in court. An arraignment in California is expected in the coming weeks, as the case moves toward the jurisdiction where investigators found the majority of the alleged evidence. For now, Markle remains released under strict conditions while the federal investigation continues.
