Trucker Stabbed 17 Times in Terrifying Rest Stop Bathroom Attack — Suspect Followed Him Inside Before Fleeing in His Semi

A 28-year-old truck driver survived a horrifying attack after a man allegedly followed him into a highway rest stop bathroom in Wyoming and stabbed him 17 times before escaping in a commercial truck. Gurvinder Singh, a Sikh truck driver from Sacramento, California, was stopping for a break during an overnight journey when the seemingly unprovoked assault unfolded. The suspect, identified as 44-year-old Andrew Kris Bzdak, now faces an attempted first-degree murder charge and could spend the rest of his life behind bars if convicted.

The attack happened shortly before 3:30 a.m. on September 13, 2026, at the Bitter Creek Rest Area along Interstate 80, approximately 41 miles east of Rock Springs. Surveillance footage reportedly showed Singh entering the restroom, followed shortly afterward by another man investigators later identified as Bzdak. Less than a minute later, the suspect was seen running out of the building. Singh emerged moments afterward, visibly wounded and struggling to remain on his feet before collapsing outside.

According to court documents, Singh told investigators that he was attacked from behind while inside the men’s restroom. He initially did not realize his attacker was carrying a weapon. After managing to push the man away, he saw what appeared to be a blue knife. The attacker reportedly said nothing throughout the assault. Investigators documented 17 wounds, including two stab injuries to Singh’s neck and two to his chest. The severity of the injuries required him to be airlifted to a hospital in Casper, Wyoming.

The suspect allegedly ran to his semi-truck and fled along Interstate 80. But a family who had heard the commotion and witnessed the aftermath refused to let him disappear without a trace. They followed the truck long enough to photograph identifying information and passed those details to authorities. Around 5 a.m., Wyoming Highway Patrol officers spotted the vehicle near a Flying J truck stop and arrested Bzdak without incident. Investigators reportedly discovered a shopping bag containing clothing and wet wipes that appeared to have blood on them.

The motive remains one of the most troubling unanswered questions. Singh is a Sikh man, and the attack raised concerns among Sikh and South Asian communities about possible bias-motivated violence against truck drivers. However, Sweetwater County authorities have said there is currently no indication that the assault was a hate crime. Prosecutors have also emphasized that investigators do not yet know why Singh was targeted. No conversation or confrontation between the two men before the stabbing has been established in the available evidence.

Singh survived and was eventually released from the hospital to recover with his family. He has received support from the Jakara Movement, an organization serving Punjabi Sikh communities, and has expressed a desire to return to truck driving when his health allows. Meanwhile, Bzdak has been bound over to felony-level court on a charge of attempted first-degree murder. He remains in custody on a $1 million bond. If convicted, he could face life imprisonment. The case is a chilling reminder that even a routine stop for rest on a remote highway can turn into a life-threatening encounter.
